An instant sense of warmth overcomes you when you walk into the Covent Garden branch of Zizzi. Perhaps it’s the massive wood-fired oven stoked high to keep the pizzas cranking out, or maybe it’s body heat generated by pre-theatre diners crammed into closely packed tables. It’s probably not because of the brusque service, but that’s not why people flock to this slightly more refined older sister of the ASK chain. It’s more to do with the food: simple Italian dishes to suit most taste buds, at a price that won’t break the bank. Our antipasti starter was predictable but perfectly pleasant to pick at; bruschetta seemed more like mashed tomato on toast; pizza and pasta were passable but hardly memorable.
