First the positives. The setting is unarguably impressive: there are great views over the Thames, with a close-up on Tower Bridge. The tables on the river terrace are alluring, especially at night. Inside, the decor (generally quite plain and modern but with a few French country-kitchen bits and pieces dotted about) is inoffensive. And staff are welcoming. But that’s about it. Our most recent meal here saw a really slack performance. It wasn’t until the waiter came to take our order that he revealed many, many dishes from an initially tempting menu were off – including such basics as chips. We ended up having mash with our (very average) fish. Dressed crab and potted shrimps were passable, shallot tart was a huge quiche-like wedge, leaving fisherman’s pie as the best of a bad lot. Hopes of better things for dessert were dashed by treacle sponge that was dry around the edges and needed every bit of custard it came with. Service was generally chaotic, if willing. Even if we experienced an off-night, at these prices (roast beef with yorkshire pudding cost £18.50) our meal was unacceptable. New owners D&D London need to take heed.
