After last year’s poor review, the Chop House has delivered only a small improvement this time. But – witness the full house on a January evening – the food is only part of the point here, with stunning views of Tower Bridge and a special-occasion buzz (in a ‘visiting town’ kind of way) contributing to the overall experience. To make the most of the riverside location, the wood-fitted room is long and thin, with french windows to throw back in summer. It’s divided into bar and restaurant areas, the latter with added napery and an extra degree of fanciness on the menu. In the bar, we started with a pitcher of flavourless prawns and an oxtail soup that was greasy and seemed to be made from inferior stock. Mains were an improvement, particularly the capably roasted pheasant, but a slightly watery fisherman’s pie lacked diversity beyond a couple of rubbery clams. A dessert of rhubarb trifle was delicious, yet its sherry-soaked sponge didn’t work. Service was pleasant enough and the wine list well spread. Still, given the high-ish prices and the intensifying competition, the verdict has to be: don’t come for the food alone.

We have been already four times to this restaurant. The food is nice, nothing out of the blue, but they have some really nice dishes. Try their pumpkin soup.
The reason why we keep going back is because is the best restaurant to take our friends when they are coming to visit us in london. It has an excellent view over the Tower Bridge in a quite area of hte south bank.
As a negative point I have to say that out of the 4 times we have been there, just once we got properly served. It takes long time and lots of energy to get the attention of some of the waiters! Moreover, they have split the restaurant in two parts, the propper restaurant and the bar. The 10 GBP menu only applies to the bar, but they do not say it clearly, so last time we went, they asked us to move seats when we were already seated and with the drinks on hte table.
Avoid at all costs !!
As a local resident we have tried to walk in for Sunday brunch on several occasions and been turned away, when half the tables are empty! They advertise brunch served until 12, however you will be lucky to be given a table after 11.30. Do yourself a favour and walk 100m further to All Bar One for a cheap and cheerful breakfast with the same view, or for an early lunch Cantina (same group as Chop House) where the staff are friendly and the food is better.
The arrogance of the management at Chop House is incredible in the current climate, hopefully this restaurant will go under and be replaced by something better!
