  • Our two visits to BBB were an education in how hospitality should not be done. Which is a shame, because it's a gorgeously designed open-plan bar and restaurant, with a first-floor art gallery due to open shortly, and a roof terrace in time for next summer.

The floor staff on our visit looked as though they had stepped straight out of a modelling agency's books. The room was their catwalk - too bad for anyone who wanted, say, their table cleared, or to order a glass of wine. Even the manager walked past our beckoning table to sit with his friends. Only the greeter at the door seemed to know what she was actually there for.

The catalogue of mistakes ranged from simply staring through our hand-waving to not bringing cutlery. Our waitress struggled to remember the three desserts on offer, and another waiter didn't know if they had been brought in or made on site. And given that the staff weren't terribly busy serving, couldn't one of them have given the stairs a quick mop? Or deigned to clean the Ladies'?

Despite all this, the food was, mostly, quite good. My roast chicken soup starter was a warming, flavoursome bowl. Poking around didn't reveal the promised parsley dumplings and the waitress, under duress, went off to check, eventually reporting back well into our mains that the kitchen had run out of dumplings. The serrano ham was delicious but let down by watery, weak melon. My main course of sea bass with a winter salad seemed small, but the fish was cooked to perfection, and the fennel, pine nut and sultana salad was beautiful. The excellent Argentinian steak came blue, just as it had been ordered, the creamy parsnip mash was a delight.

With some staff training, this could be a fantastic addition to Shoreditch. Until they sort this out, however, don't bother.

Went to BBB last saturday for a friends bday. Terrible, terrible, terrible experience.
Shockingly dire service both at the table and all the bars, overly expensive and mediocre food.

If you live in London then you've got to expect a couple of overpriced nights out once in a while right? BBB is taking the piss - the food was simply dull, it would have been really hard to put any less effort into the cooking. It was the bare minimum to be able to call it a restaurant, steak came cooked either medium-rare or medium-well which is the trades way of saying, we can't cook how you want it so we'll only even try cooking it a little or a little more. The lamb was litterally put in the oven, cooked for the required ammount of time and served. "Balsamic" vinegar was just average redwine vinegar, wine was supermarket bottom shelf, and the salads were just lettuce, tomato and onion, no dressing - i can make that myself thanks! In fact it was so incompetent that they even left half our order off the final bill - it almost made up for the disappointing experience.
Really yet another proof that these sorts of fad places are great if you have money and no taste. For anyone with a bit of class, they certainly wouldn't go twice..

My visit to beach blanket Babylon was absolutely appalling. On arrival we were asked to go to the bar to order our drinks, which we did, only to be ignored by the barman. He eventually took our order only to then be informed that he could not serve us as we were not standing at the correct side of the bar. We moved, and then were promptly ignored. We were then asked to sit at a side table where we waited for 25 minutes to receive our drinks, even though there were 6 members of staff chatting at the bar. Whilst waiting to be seated for our meal we asked for some bread while we were waiting. We were told that the bread was only for starters when seated at our dining table. When we questioned this, we were given 2 ROCK HARD rolls between the 7 of us. It was then discovered that they had run out - this was at 8.00 in the evening.
We were then seated in the dining area and given only 1 menu between all 7 of us. We were informed by the ONE friendly staff member that they did not have enough for everyone in the restaurant. Due to this we were told we had to wait until other menus became available for each of us to view their selection. By this point in time, we were not impressed and asked to speak to the manager. We were told by the shift runner that the manager was not present, and there was no-one we could speak to about the poor service. At this point we decided to leave the restaurant and were approached by two suited gentlemen asking what the problem was. When we asked what their position was within the company, they informed us they were the trainee Manager and the Manager in charge of the Notting Hill branch. They stiffly refused to tell us their names. After listening to the series of events, they made no comment and said there was nothing they could do, and were in no way apologetic or concerned by the list of circumstances, and were, in fact, appallingly rude.
The purpose for this night out was to celebrate our ten year anniversary, but also to see if this restaurant would be suitable for our annual Christmas party, accommodating 150 clients. We have clearly decided against it. We left the restaurant to go next door, “Les 3 Garcons”, where we noticed on the wall outside between the two establishments, a sign that informed all potential diners that there is absolutely no connection between the two companies. This was very obvious as the quality of service we received next door was outstanding.
I did call again this morning to reiterate that we felt we had been treated badly but the “man with no name” at the other end of the telephone who said he was the manager didn’t want to hear the complaint. So be warned.

i am a local and loyal of bbb, but need to say since few weeks this place simply sucks... It's a shame to see big potential ruining so quickly.

Took my wife there on our aniversary all i can say i was totally embaressed the nigh was a disaster. The food was cold and digusting the crotons looked like cardboard cutouts and the steak we ordered was burnt and the size of a welsh lamb shop.
STAY AWAY!! disgusting place its more of a teenie catwalk than a serious place to enjoy company.

This restaurant did not live up to expectations. Service was average, food was average which I commented on but nothing was acted upon. However venue and table were fabulous and I would surely return on a different night and perhaps a different menu!

I went here last Friday because we could not get into Green & Red Bar ( a fabulous Mexican Restaurant at the end of Brick Lane). I feel compelled to write to say how awful I felt this restaurant was. We were waiting for 45 minutes with no sense that we were ever going to get a table and were about to leave again when the woman on the till told us to stay. The set up here is like a spaceship. It's incredibly the technology yet the actual communcation is non existant. We were compelled to stay when she swore like out of Star Trek there really was a table available. When we got the table eventually we were ignored. We ordered wine twice still ignored and our starters arrived. When I had finished the starter the wine finally arrived. The service was UNBELIEVABLY bad. There was one strange lonely bar maid pouring drinks to straglers at the bar. She was alone but there must have been at least 10 to 15 people working this night. We finally got the wine and the main courses (which were NOT cheap) and I had opted for two starters instead and the truth is this was an expensive night for me and my friends on an ad hoc arrangement. We decided NOT to order any more as really we got no attention nothing but surley looks. Eventually we got the bill which was very expensive and concluded that 'service included' was possibly a good option for an establishment like this. The only good thing about this place is the building. The same goes for it's twin sister in Notting Hill. It seems to be all about image for Beach Blanket Babylon and there are enough rich stupid people to fill such places, but frankly none of my party who were European young successful professionals will ever return. They will have to rely on naive EUROTRASH to keep their business running. Good Luck!

    WORST SERVICE IN LONDON!!!
I attempted to attend this venue for a private function in the weekend. When we arrived we were stopped by the door staff and told we couldn't enter. The staff were extremely rude, and inconsistent with the reasoning for why we could not enter. I am still unclear as to why we were not given entry: the venue was not at capacity and we were not dressed shabbily. The friend holding the party was so disgusted that the whole party inside up and left.
I would never even attempt to come here again. I felt humilated by the door staff, who gave the impression that civility was beneath them. This venue offered the worst service I have encountered in six years in London.
