This thin, aquamarine sliver of a cocktail bar is as renowned as the upmarket Chinese eaterie that surrounds it. Tucked down a dog-leg alley behind Hanway Street, Hakkasan is reached via a staircase and blossom-scented cloakroom - a descent into another world of beautifully lit, oriental sophistication. Drinkers must negotiate the dining room's interlocking booth dividers to get to the long, back-lit bar; then it's simply a case of sitting pretty and soaking up the glamour. Some 15 martinis and 26 long drinks (£9) are made with spirits such as 'Nikka whisky from the barrel' and 'Ciroc grape distilled vodka'. The signature Hakkatini mixes Campari, Belvedere Pomarancza, Grand Marnier, fresh apple and orange bitters; a Hakka is saké, Ketel One, lychee juice, passion fruit and coconut cream. Saké is a key ingredient: note the Purple Emperor with Matusalem 10 and jasmine tea, and the Chinese mule with ginger, coriander and Platinum vodka. Sold separately cold (£20-£96) and hot (£19.50),saké comes in Kubota Manju and Kenbishi varieties; other premium spirits (Buffalo Trace bourbon, Gran Centenario Reposado) come in £6.50 measures.

Eep! I have never done this before and it scares me somewhat. How am I supposed to sell myself (not in a prostitutey way) and yet not be up myself?...
