• Favela Chic

  • With its odious name and a website that gabbles on about 'a big eclectic family that has grown organically throughout time', it's easy to distrust this ultra-hip venture, sister to the original Parisian enterprise. Yet Favela Chic gets away with its pretensions. The spacious interior mixes circus hoops, abundant greenery, bits of timber and flock wallpaper in entertaining fashion, and the events calendar is full to bursting: chilled, with a funky multinational crowd and jazzy DJs early in the week, and lively, with a cover charge (after 9pm), and bands playing anything from garage to world music, at the weekend. Drinks (cocktails or Brahma beer) aren't cheap.

I have to agree with RCM below. We went for a friend's birthday - he had booked for 15 people not realising that if all do not show up you get charged for 15 people. This is because groups over 10 have to eat from the set menu. This is not set menu in the normal sense where each person picks from the options available. They bring everything on the menu on large plates and you help yourself - this is extremely awkward not to mention a rip off. We knew that only 10 people were coming and bartered with the manager to be charged for 12 people instead of the 15 booked as we intended to stay all night and would easily spend a lot of money that night. There is no way that the amount of food they provided was for 12 people or even 10. Everyone felt awkward about putting food on their plates as there clearly wasn't enough and as we hadn't been able to choose what we wanted, ceratin options were clearly more popular than others. Really put a downer on the birthday. The food was tasty but would definitely not recommend for groups over ten where you can't choose from the normal menu!

Really unpleasant: Mediocre food, aggressive staff. I went with a group and was supposed to be celebrating a birthday. The staff kept hassling us to order before all the people were there (2 people were 30 mins late). It was supposed to be a fun event but this hassling really killed the mood.
Then because there were 11 of us instead of the 12 we'd booked for, they wanted to charge us for food for the missing person.
When the food arrived it was really disappointing - for example, plain chicken not in any sauce and with no discernable seasoning. For the money charged I would have expected at least something better than what I could cook for myself at home.
Before we'd even finished eating a bouncer was hassling us - again, aggressively - to put our bags in the cloakroom – while we were trying to eat! Really quite unpleasant all in all.

Best club in the area. Excellent music good people. It is more enjoyable uring the week when it is less busy. They also have great live music during the week

The place is ok but personnel completely untolerable. Secutiry at the door pretends like it has to guard the White House, not the club.

Fun venue with great, often nicely cheesy tunes, and a good, and good-looking, crowd. No downsides - much the best night out in the area.
