  • On the site of the former Thang Loi, which was notable for its north Vietnamese dishes, Mien Tray conversely prides itself on the fresh, sweet flavours of southern Vietnam, a cuisine characterised by its emphasis on seafood and influences from southern Chinese immigrants. The stunner of our meal was deep-fried sea bass with fish sauce and mango. Presented whole with slivers of the just-ripe fruit, chilli and lashings of fishy nuoc mam, it was a pure harmony of flavours (sweet, salty, sour) and textures (crisp skin, moist fish, slippery mango). Pho dac biet (‘special’ pho with beefy goodies) contained superb, irregularly shaped beef balls that bounced nicely on the teeth and had clearly been handmade (mass-produced beef balls tend to have a limp, overly processed texture). To finish, the Vietnamese coffee was also excellent – a refreshing, smooth brew and not cloying thanks to a judicious hand with the condensed milk. Alternatively, try the tra sua tran chau (Vietnamese tapioca pearl tea), if available.

Having been loyal to Tay Do Cafe for a couple of years, a visit to Mien Tay was a real treat. The food there was delicious, freshly cooked and, with a BYO policy and no corkage charge, an absolute bargain. Despite a full house, including a party of 18, the service at Mien Tay remained completely unflappable - personal, prompt, and always with a smile. We were even allowed to finish our starters before the mains followed...Tay Do, take note! They brought us slices of fresh orange and banana fritters for dessert...to say we ate like kings is an understatement. I highly recommended Mien Tay (and try the "Goat with Galangal on a sizzling hot plate" dish - superb!), but keep the secret to yourself!

i went to the restuarant over the weekend and made a promise to add a comment to this place. WOW. Everything I ate was so delicious and fresh and then the bill came and it was SOOOOOOO cheap! I was so stuffed for £15! i wish i lived in east london, it must be cheaper to eat here than cooking at home. the summer rolls are amazing, don;t miss them as they are called fresh rolls but i asked and i am glad i did!

Yum Yum Yum! I had a yummy meal here with my boyfriend, I tried the fish but had the whole seabass with chilli and garlic, it was totally perfect. My boyfriend had Pho which he loved and it was just perfect for lunch.

I tried this restaurant after I read your review and was surprised to see you had given a restuarant on Kingsland Road 4 stars. I have been more and more disappointed with that area so was dying to see if it was the saviour of yummy affordable vietnamese. And it was! I could not fault the food, try the salt and pepper squid - I have eaten this dish many many times and this had to be the best!

Hmmm. I find this whole writing about myself pretty difficult. I think one of the most attractive qualities in a person is modesty but I guess that...
