  • Ruddles County, Summer Lightning, Timothy Taylor Landlord, and Peroni (among others) on tap – the beer’s not thrown out with the bath water at this exciting new refurbishment. The Princess Victoria’s sheer size gives it the edge over many competitors, for there’s room to house cheerfully loud drinkers as well as dining couples and families. Tables are plentiful in both bar and dining room – the latter including a long communal set-up where we ate after enjoying beers by the impressive horseshoe-shaped, marble-topped bar. Our waiter, a qualified sommelier, confessed he knew more about wine than the menu, but worked conscientiously to ensure everything was just so. Brawn, the least attractive starter, was successful thanks to its deep flavour and moist texture. Terrific triple-cooked chips came with accurately chargrilled 28-day-matured ribeye (the evening’s most popular order), but the Princess Victoria can do fancy too, as shown by a delicious hake fillet with clams, smoked eel, macaroni and vegetable cream sauce. Desserts featured superb ice-creams: vanilla with cherry clafoutis, rhubarb with a jamaican ginger cake and rhubarb compote – though the latter felt like two separate puds. The sensational wine list offers a choice of carafe sizes plus 175ml glasses; diners are encouraged to mix and match with their food. No persuasion needed.

My partner LOVED the meat-heavy food and original menu, and the extensive beer and ale list. I however, while I appreciated the originality of all the courses, did not like the food much. It was all very boldly traditional, so it didn't offer much choice for the non-meat-eater, or those watching their weight! Bone marrow dumplings and sausages were nice though... Made me feel like I was having a heart attack afterwards however

Had a lovely dinner here with a group of friends. Love the way it is primarily a pub but with a great restaurant "attached". This is how it should be with gastropubs, who all too often try to transform themselves from a pub into a restaurant, and the pub part becomes like a waiting room. And if they want to charge >£12 for mains, they better learn a thing or two from Princess Victoria. The only unfulfilled point, as is the case with most (gastro)pubs, is that beer is not valued highly enough to feature on drinks list in the restaurant. Some tasting notes on both beer and wines would be extremely welcome too. British beer industry could help themselves by educating young wine-drinking crowds on pleasures of matching beer with food, and where best place to do so than in a gastropub. But PV is a great place, lovely decor and fine food.

I just came back from Princes Victoria and I can say two thinks.
One that food was good and place was nice and cozy BUT there is another think!
While we were eating our dinner with nine other friends there was a stuff behind the bar gossiping about as so obviously! I fount it really upsetting! And when I complain I didn’t hear sorry!!! I think they should apologize at least!!
I am not English person but I am still paying costumer! Would be nice to show a bit of respect!!This is not what you would expected from a place with a high ratings.

Great posting Nick with constructive criticism put across in the right way. Points raised noted and will implement a move towards improving consistency. The next ones on me with a personal tour of our cellars for you to see just how we maintain and condition our real ales prior to serving. Many thanks. Matt Wilkin

I have been going since it opened and the food and service is still first rate, however a few things have started to niggle. The first is that they keep running out of a number of beers (ales) on a regular basis. The other is this tendency to allow table in the main bar area to be 'reserved' for groups (who are not eating) which combned with the continued encroachment of eating into the bar area does not make it welcoming to just popping in for a relaxing drink.

Just a note to say I've been visiting the Vic since it reopened and it is still a great pub reaching very high standards. Since it opened I have taken various friends and family there and in turn they have all returned or recommended it. Mines a Guinness!

This pub is definitely worth its praise, not only the endless word off mouth in the area but the constant great reviews we've read. We found out about the Princess Victoria through Square Meal, to then only find out on arrival that it had won the Time Out best gastro pub award within 4 months of opening. The buzz of the bar is addictive which seems to have no respite from customers. True....It is a bit loud on weekends, but no surprise there when its full of customers enjoying themselves. Good news is that they let you in with your dog to eat in the bar area, so its perfect for our family outing, and the kids are happy to have Sparky along with us. You've got us hooked on a simply great local pub! Well done.

Great pub, but again i agree with other's - the place is over booked - i had lunch with my husband one sunday and what we thought would be a relaxing lunch turned into noise from hell! There were too many people crammed into the dinning room we could hardly hear each other speak. Great food a little over priced but still great. Well done - the renovations are fantastic but you still need to scrub up on your customer service.
