  • Ruddles County, Summer Lightning, Timothy Taylor Landlord, and Peroni (among others) on tap – the beer’s not thrown out with the bath water at this exciting new refurbishment. The Princess Victoria’s sheer size gives it the edge over many competitors, for there’s room to house cheerfully loud drinkers as well as dining couples and families. Tables are plentiful in both bar and dining room – the latter including a long communal set-up where we ate after enjoying beers by the impressive horseshoe-shaped, marble-topped bar. Our waiter, a qualified sommelier, confessed he knew more about wine than the menu, but worked conscientiously to ensure everything was just so. Brawn, the least attractive starter, was successful thanks to its deep flavour and moist texture. Terrific triple-cooked chips came with accurately chargrilled 28-day-matured ribeye (the evening’s most popular order), but the Princess Victoria can do fancy too, as shown by a delicious hake fillet with clams, smoked eel, macaroni and vegetable cream sauce. Desserts featured superb ice-creams: vanilla with cherry clafoutis, rhubarb with a jamaican ginger cake and rhubarb compote – though the latter felt like two separate puds. The sensational wine list offers a choice of carafe sizes plus 175ml glasses; diners are encouraged to mix and match with their food. No persuasion needed.

This pub is definitely worth its praise, not only the endless word off mouth in the area but the constant great reviews we've read. We found out about the Princess Victoria through Square Meal, to then only find out on arrival that it had won the Time Out best gastro pub award within 4 months of opening. The buzz of the bar is addictive which seems to have no respite from customers. True....It is a bit loud on weekends, but no surprise there when its full of customers enjoying themselves. Good news is that they let you in with your dog to eat in the bar area, so its perfect for our family outing, and the kids are happy to have Sparky along with us. You've got us hooked on a simply great local pub! Well done.

Great pub, but again i agree with other's - the place is over booked - i had lunch with my husband one sunday and what we thought would be a relaxing lunch turned into noise from hell! There were too many people crammed into the dinning room we could hardly hear each other speak. Great food a little over priced but still great. Well done - the renovations are fantastic but you still need to scrub up on your customer service.

Great great great. Couldn't have written a better or more accurate review than the one above from Time Out. Live locally and have been several times and find that for a Pub it fits the bill perfectly. Being a Blogger myself and living nearby I've read pretty much all that's been written on the Princess Victoria and can only say that what the professionals write from Time Out to The Independent and Financial Times has been pretty consistent. As for the disgruntled I'd imagine they'd complain on a daily basis? After all, how many of those people do we cross paths with on a daily basis? Keep up the good work guys as you're doing the Bush proud! Rob

Love this place. Passed by last weekend for their regular Saturday Market and we're blown away. We bought soaps from Provence, freshly baked bread and cheese with a bottle of wine to boot from Matt who mans the stands too. Popped inside afterwards for a coffee and pastry in their back garden and just relaxed the morning away. Thanks for this little Oasis which you've provided us guys!

I have to agree with some comments below.Despite the good food served there are some drawbacks of a ordinary pub.The manager looks really stressed and didnt pay attention to the problem we had in our table. Its a shame that such a beautiful place misses the basics.I am local so we havent got many options anyway...

Just thought I would re-post to confirm Matt does read these comments. I popped in last night with my wife and immediately Matt came over to check ihad had my pork scratchings (see my previous post)

I tried to book a table on the phone and the person responsible could barely speak english, and the organisation is still on its first steps.
I think that this is a sample of how a place can be mismanaged.
I hope you can improve your costumer service department.Tks

Had a memorable lunch at the Princess Victoria - superb cooking, interesting (and spot-on) recommendations of "different" wines, and a service level that beautifully trod the fine line between attentiveness and excess. Top marks to the chef for sensitive handling of top quality ingredients served up with imagination and class.

My new local and a great one it is too. I regularly go in with my 2 year old son (after the park or swimming of course) and the staff are great with him. My only criticism is that the pork scratching are too good - I think I've added about a stone in weight.
