Ruddles County, Summer Lightning, Timothy Taylor Landlord, and Peroni (among others) on tap – the beer’s not thrown out with the bath water at this exciting new refurbishment. The Princess Victoria’s sheer size gives it the edge over many competitors, for there’s room to house cheerfully loud drinkers as well as dining couples and families. Tables are plentiful in both bar and dining room – the latter including a long communal set-up where we ate after enjoying beers by the impressive horseshoe-shaped, marble-topped bar. Our waiter, a qualified sommelier, confessed he knew more about wine than the menu, but worked conscientiously to ensure everything was just so. Brawn, the least attractive starter, was successful thanks to its deep flavour and moist texture. Terrific triple-cooked chips came with accurately chargrilled 28-day-matured ribeye (the evening’s most popular order), but the Princess Victoria can do fancy too, as shown by a delicious hake fillet with clams, smoked eel, macaroni and vegetable cream sauce. Desserts featured superb ice-creams: vanilla with cherry clafoutis, rhubarb with a jamaican ginger cake and rhubarb compote – though the latter felt like two separate puds. The sensational wine list offers a choice of carafe sizes plus 175ml glasses; diners are encouraged to mix and match with their food. No persuasion needed.

I've now visited The Princess Victoria now on four occasions and I can honestly say that from an absolutely great first visit subsequent visits have only reinforced my high opinion of all that is now The Princess Victoria. Food: superbly cooked and great value - congratulations to James McLean. Wine: a huge range of wines and so knowledgeably served - congratulations also to Matt Wilkin. Service: friendly and efficient - well done to the staff. Under the management of James and Matt The Princess Victoria has an outstanding future. I can't wait to go again.
Great looking pub well rennovated, bar food is better than average. Unfortunately wine list is a bit pretentious & expensive. Have been on several occassions, staff have not been great and management quite rude & dismissive. This is a shame as it ruins what could be a great addition to the area.
Friends recommended we try the new look Princess Victoria . What a great surprise. Beautifully restored. Fanstastic food, extremely palate friendly with a great selection of wines to match. Staff friendly, knowledgeable & happy to assist with selections. A great night & definite favourite for us now.
I thought this one of the most beautiful pubs I had ever been in and I was terribly sad that I had already eaten as the food looked fabulous. Not quite sure what those other customers are talking about as the staff were delightful the night I was there, and the manager extremely helpful with choosing a wine to sip. I would highly recommend it - but go hungry!
I have been a couple of times and the food, wine and service are really excellent!!
I went to the Princess Victoria after hearing some great things from friends who had recently dined there. The food was amazing and the service was second to none! This pub has recently undergone a refit and I can't tell you how gorgeous it is. The atmosphere was pumping (and I was there mid week) - I would highly recommend this for a superb dinner or just a few drinks ...
The winelist and food at the Princess Victoria are top drawer. A real gem that sets new standards for pubs.
A promising start but has failed to live up to it's potential. The menu is still limiting and even though the wine selection is good the prices are extortionate. Faboulous decor is spolit by a rude manager and staff.
Not sure about the below comments....we've been several times now and find it terrific. Food is delicious although vegetarian options are limited. Wine list is awesome and service friendly with no fuss...especially for a pub. Sometimes I wonder if bad or rude service is warranted by being a bad customer? Will be back!
If this is not the best pub in the area i will eat my hat.
It really has everything one would want from a modern pub and dining room.
Well done to all concerned with this establishment.
