Not your typical eaterie, The Deptford Project is housed in a converted 1960s train carriage. The loos had a previous life as a garden shed, a brightly painted table spans the length of the interior, and cheery decking out front adds to the laid-back, arty vibe of the joint (the café is part of a regeneration plan for the area that includes a creative industries market and art galleries). The food on offer is unpretentious and homely – lunch options include the likes of a light potato salad accompanied by crunchy green salad, or satisfyingly spiced curry on a bed of turmeric-spiked basmati. If visiting for breakfast or afternoon tea, try the excellent muffins made with eggs from the company’s own free-range chickens. There is a commitment to sourcing ingredients locally, and the coffee is sustainably farmed. Locals, from Goldsmiths students to young families, should find this a pleasant spot to chill and recharge.

An espresso is not a half pint of milk.
Less attempt at 'hipness' and more attention to quality is needed.
