  • Buenos Aires Café

  • Reinaldo Vargas was once a paparazzo and the high walls of his parrilla (grill) restaurant are decked with shots of Hello! stars, as well as photos of his beloved home city. Starters of juicy meat empanadas and fantastically tasty grilled provolone cheese fired the taste buds without sating them. Chips were chunky and golden. Desserts are baked in-house, and both the flan (crème caramel) with dulce de leche and cream, and trifle were delectable. But the main draw is meat. Steaks, sourced in Argentina, are huge, tender and packed with clover-perfumed flavour. Vargas has trained his Ecuadorean chef to char them like the best Argentinian parrillero. The 400g (14oz) bife de chorizo had the classic grassy quality of rump; it’s the gaucho’s favourite cut. The menu also features melt-in-the-mouth milanesa (breaded calf’s meat): a skinny cut, but enough for lunch for two.

Fantastic restaurant with excellent meat and pasta options. Currently my favourite restaurant in the area.
Staff were charming and efficient despite how busy the restaurant was.

    Hi Kate,
I think you've fundamentally missed the point of The Internet. It's a public forum, and if some people feel the need to comment on Time Out's review, then that is their prerogative. It doesn't mean they have any interest in feeding back to you personally. What are you going to do, give them vouchers? Defend poor service? People complain by not going back and warning others off, and that should be celebrated.
PS. I'd advise you to reconsider posting in all CAPITALS next time, it looks like you're shouting, and reads as testy and angry, not the tone you intend I'm sure, but just beware.

AWFUL. We booked over a week in advance to introduce two of our London friends to what we thought was a great local restaurant. This was the fourth time we have eaten here and we had the worst experience. This place is deteriorating and I will never return. I called in advance to confirm my reservation and they made a point to tell me 3 times over the phone that we only had 2 hours and needed to leave after that. It is fair to book tables for a certain period of time, but the way in which this was communicated was very rude. We arrived and were sat by the door. It was quite cold but we did not complain about this. We ordered starters, which were good, but the waiter started clearing the table before we were finished. I actually had to ask for my knife and fork back, and for him to put the food back on the table! Our mains were large portions and the food good, but only lukewarm when it arrived on cold plates. We had to ask for the plates to be heated, and they were brought back within 30 seconds only lukewarm. Needless to say, the steaks were stone cold when we were halfway through. We asked if we could heat them and were told off by one of the rudest, most abrupt women I have ever met. I was very offended to be treated in such a manner. I complained to the manager, who repeated exactly what the woman said in the same abrupt manner. The last complaint I had is that one of us ordered a steak well done, and it came out rare in the middle. We noticed this after a few bites and the staff didn't even apologise, just stated in the same ungrateful, unhelpul manner that if we noticed as soon as they brought it out, they would have taken it back. We could have stayed for another 45 mins with another bottle of wine and dessert, but just wanted to get out of there after that. The staff ruined a nice evening for us and I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED.

My husband tried to take me to Buenos Aires Cafe last night as a surprise he booked the outside table hoping for a balmy evening as we had both wanted to come for some time. Last night the monsoon rains were unbelievable and we got soaked walking to the restaurant which we saw some how the funny side as it was so dramatic! On arriving we were greeted unpleasantly by the rudest man I have ever met who told us extremely unpleasantly that there were no table for us as we had booked the outside table and turfed us out back into the monsoon - shocked is all I can say we were .... so no idea how good the food is or isn't but you need to sort out the service immediatly! V DISAPOINTING

Eaten here five times now, always excellent service, fantastic food and wine. I prefer the steaks, but last week one of our friends had a pizza the size I have never seen before, and the funny thing was she picked it because she thought it would be small!

Thanks for your reply. As I said, I have come across two Head Waitors, one of whom was excellent the other of which was highly offensive.
I havbe a number of friends in Blackheath with the same opinion so I assume this wasnt a one off.
Lets hope you are married to the nicer one! I also wasnt referring to Gaucho Grill but you might want to try Buen Ayre in Hackney for some real service.

AS THE OWNER I DO CARE VERY MUCH AND WOULD APPRECIATE CUSTOMERS BRINGING PROBLEMS TO MY ATTENTION PERSONALLY AS APPOSED TO PUBLIC INTERNET SITES ,FIRSTLY MY HUSBAND IS AS ARGENTINIAN AS THEY GET, BORN IN B.A. , AND SECONDLY THE MIXED GRILL IS FULL OF STEAK , CHORIZO AND OFTEN COMPLIMENTED RIBS AND INDEED THERE IS ONLY A 1/4 CHICKEN ON A MIXED GRILL.OURS HAS IN COMPARISON FAR MORE ON IT THAN OUR COMPETITORS. IN ARGENTINA THIS IS CONSIDERED A TREAT , SOMETHING YOU ONLY HAVE OCCASIONALLY .IF YOU CONSIDER GAUCHO GRILL AUTHENTIC ITS NOT .OUR MANAGER AND WE ONLY HAVE ONE IS COURTEOUS AND CHARMING , HE IS ALSO ARGENTINIAN! HOWEVER IF OUR CUSTOMERS ARE PERHAPS RUDE THEMSELVES HE MIGHT RETURN THE FAVOUR, OR PERHAPS IT GOT LOST IN TRANSLATION..I AM EASILY CONTACTABLE THROUGH EITHER OF OUR BUSINESSES TO DISCUSS THIS FURTHER.

I have eaten here a number of times and unfortunately the restaurant can be hit and miss.
There are two head waiters. One is friendly, helpful and courteous. The other offensive, abrupt and discourteous.
Unfortunately last night we got the latter whose perception of himself fell somewhere short of our perception of the food.
The parrillhada is full of chicken and meatless ribs. Chicken isnt very big in Argentina!
There are a number of more authentic Argentinean restaurants across London however due to the prominent location of this restaurant the owners of this restaurant dont appear to care.

what a fantastic place, service was excellent, very friendly and efficient and what a great atmosphere.
The food was out of this world. And if any body think that Argentineans eat only meat, I think they are going for a big surprise. Their home made pastas and pizzas where one of the best I had eating and I didn't know that 55% of the Argentineans are italians. I will recommend any thing on their menu, but you must try the mix grill, pizzas and their home made sausages.
When it come to the desserts again it was fantastic, everything is home made, including the ice cream which they made at the sister cafe in Greenwich.
We where a large table and the restaurant was full, well in reality is full every night, we did try several times to get a table but without success, but finally we got one and I have to say we enjoy very much and I am looking forward to go back again.
I recommend it to any body who wants to have a great dinner out
    Oliver
