A haunt of Hoxtonites, Cây Tre veers towards the hip and trendy – separating itself from the homey institutions around the corner on Kingsland Road. Wallpaper is swirling line drawings with Buddhist iconography that wouldn’t look out of place in a psychedelic colouring book. Cheerful fairy lights dot the walls leading from the ground-floor dining area to the more intimate basement space. Perhaps what is most appealing to the clientele – mainly non-Vietnamese foodies – are the suggested wine pairings with most dishes. Our starter of Indochine beef (a ceviche of tenderloin doused in lemon juice, herbs and shallots) went very nicely with the Costières de Nîmes red. It soon became clear that Cây Tre excels in meat; the bo luc lac (‘shaking’ beef) was sensational, rich with the smoky flavour of the wok and a hint of cognac. Stuffed swimming crab was oversalted and drenched in a gloopy sauce, but we ended on a delicious high note with the basa (a type of catfish) grilled with lemongrass and turmeric. Service was efficient, though on a busy Friday night you’re likely to feel pressured into leaving as soon as you put down your cutlery.

Pho is most difficult dish to cook well in Vietnamese cuisine, but Cay Tre does it excellent. The restaurant is really different with the whole strip of Kingsland Road, with menus of auhthentic dishes that you can only find in proper restaurants in Saigon, or Hochiminh City. The chef has a skill that I can't believe that he can cook all those dishes well, which is completely different to each other. The wine list really sings as well.
The good thing about this restaurant is about its atmostphere and food. You will find a true dining experience here, the best vietnamese in Kingsland Road. Low lighting, dark wood, excellent food (I love their grilled beef and their salad, Pho is a must). it is also a perfect place for co-operate event party ot birthday as they have a private room for 60 people, quite good.
I deffintely in love with Cay Tre and would recommend everyone who loves vietnamese food in London. This is the best, top-notch at the lowest price you can find in Kingsland Road, London
Recommended as one of the places top chefs in London would love to go for 'great feed and a few laughs with their mates' (by London Evening Standard), Cay Tre deserves to be the best Vietnamese restaurant in town.
Convenient location (4 mins walk from Old Street station), lovable decoration, wise wines and a fantastic combination of Vietnamese street food and fine dining. The salads, pho (traditional Vietnamese noodle soup) and some chef's favourites are outstanding and irresistible.
To avoid being in a queue, you should book a table in advance or choose another easier solution: just popping into Viet Grill, (Cay Tre's sister), right on Kinglands Road, 5 mins walk from Cay Tre. Ask any of the staff, they would love to show you the way.
I myself would say: 'Two thumbs up' for this restaurant but watch out, the staff may not be as nice as you expect.
Fabulous Vietnamese restaurant in London. This restaurant is a hidden gem of trendy Hoxton where you can find from the oldest dish of vietnamese cuisine to the most modern and hip dishes. The best place to go for a real vietnamese meal in a trendy decor.
