  • Casa Madeira

  • Since a commercial coffee chain arrived within customer-nabbing distance, the Madeira empire has gone into overdrive. The delicatessen remains unchanged, but the café now has a lucrative internet sideline, and the bakery has become a Portuguese restaurant. In a bid to widen appeal, the café has sacrificed its Portuguese dishes for popular, yet predictable, fry-ups, toasted sarnies and omelettes. In fact, the only Portuguese dish cited was chicken piri-piri, and that came with chips. If you’re wondering where the Portuguese chef went, look no further than the owners’ new restaurant next door, Casa Madeira, which opened in late 2007. It has a spick and span appearance with starched tablecloths, uniformed waiters and a smart bar. To our relief the menu showcased some great Portuguese dishes, including bacalhau, swordfish, and arroz de marisco. We went for pork and clams, which came with well-marinated meat, plenty of baby clams, and a scattering of fresh coriander – spot on. Sadly, Portuguese dishes are outnumbered by pizzas, pastas and burgers.

Me and my other half love this place! If you are looking for a snazzy looking restaurant then this isn't it. Instead its simple, authentic, clean and very Portugese (ie TV on the wall but this adds to its charm!). The whole restaurant has an unpretentious feel and we just feel totally at home when eating here. The service is friendly and our lovely waiter takes time to come over and see us everytime we eat either here or in their bakery/greasy spoon cafe next door. The food is utterly amazing (fish and meats galore!) and if you are a veggie there are lots of delicious generous sized tapas to chose from. On top of everything this place is cheap! Highly recommended.

Portuguese tapas, so very different to usual Spanish fare (including substantially bigger portions). Long and varied menu and never had a dish that wasn't delicious. Unpretentious surroundings - sometimes they'll have flat screen showing football, but volume is turned down and it's very much in the background - and very friendly service. Great neighbourhood restaurant.

This place is spot on for friendly staff and honnest food at a very reasonable price- for Londo at least. Only problem is it is not exactly in the hub- but at least it is not far from Vauxhall rail station

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great place, with great food and excellent price. Service is friendly and pleasant...we arrived in London at the end of 2008 and celebrated my son (the guy with big afro hair) 18th birthday at Casa Madeira...the T-Bone Steak was the best ever...Thank you...see you all soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just for the records, Ivan still going there always he's looking for Portuguese products in general.
