  • StringRay Globe Café, Bar & Pizzeria

    Budget choice
  • When the flower market fills Columbia Road on Sundays, an impressive queue snakes out of StringRay. Granted, the prices are low for such decent food, but the biggest draw is the café’s trendy status among east London’s fashion folk. Aviator sunglasses and leg-warmers are standard attire. A big wooden bar in the centre of the room limits the dining space, yet adds to the cosy atmosphere, along with small tables and low lighting from Tiffany lampshades. We visited on a Monday night to be met with a half-hour wait on a table for two. In deference to the student regulars, the menu offers breakfasts until 5pm, but the popular choice is for thin-crust pizzas. We opted for a fiorentina (from 19 varieties) and a dish of pork medallions topped with spinach, roasted red peppers and mozzarella. The oversized pizza arrived steaming with garlicky spinach and was a mouth-watering success. The pork was an even bigger hit, the peppers adding sweetness to the meat. Skipping the unappetising-looking desserts, we completed the east London experience by walking down to Pollard Street to see Banksy’s double yellow line flower.

I am addicted to these thin perfectly topped pizzas. They are simply mouthwateringly delicious and very fairly priced.
The service could, at times in the past, have been a little lacking in attentiveness but has definitely improved recently with new friendly waitresses as well as the weird but lovely more establised ones. The music is amazing- something new every time. The best time to go is during the day time when it is quiet and your food comes quickly. However it is understandable why the place is so rammed in the evenings and so a wait is to be expected.
Whoever doesn't like this place is just a bit too uptight and clearly doesn't understand that this pizza is far better than most in London.

I agree that the food is good but what you have to put up with to get it is ridiculous. The staff are rude and basically treat the customers as disposable because the place is crazy busy and so if you leave because they tell you there is no room but then sit the next people that come in with no reservation whilst you wait for take away pizzas is something to see... I am a local but can't wait for some competition in the area as it is desperately needed... So anyone that wants to make money please just open a decent pizza place within 5 min walk and we will come

I dont understand the 2 stars either. This place is ace and probably where i had one of the best pizza in the area! Couldnt get better critic than my Italian friend who liked our tasty bruschetta and pizza that night!
I plan to go back this week actually!
However I'd definitely avoid it on a Sunday... (ref to invasion of the Aviator sunglasses and leg-warmers type guys)
