  • Victoria Park ‘village’ is as richly dappled with gastropubs as the nearby park is currently dappled with daffodils. The Britannia, on the northern edge of the park itself is the latest pub to burst into bloom.

Formerly a dilapidated chain pub, a stylish makeover has restored the building’s Victorian glory days with vintage red, white and blue stage curtains, portraits of bygone monarchs, two clearly defined seating and lounging areas, and a dining area filled with pale wood Windsor chairs and junk shop water vases.

It’s in the dining area that the Britannia really sets itself apart, styled as a bistro, but with traditional English dishes well prepared. A potted hare with tomato chutney and toast made a meaty starter, but it was the succulent Sussex pork belly with moist black pudding, well above usual gastropub standard, that won the starters round.
The bar is usually stocked with at least two British cask ales (Spitfire, say, or Sharp’s Doom Bar from Cornwall) that rotate seasonally; plus a range of Meantime bottled beers, as well as Weston’s and Addlestone’s ciders.

Owner Andrew Maillard (formerly of Soho’s Alphabet bar) has put together an affordable wine list with plenty available by the glass. You can even buy bought-in-bulk wines to take away – just bring your own vessel and you’re charged by quantity.
Mains lived up to our whetted appetites with a Torbay sole perfectly roasted and served in a buttery lemon sauce with brown shrimps. Six hours in the oven imparted tenderness and a rich sweetness to the braised ox cheeks served with celeriac mash.

The only slight disappointment was the dessert, where a rhubarb trifle was a touch too sharp for our sweet tooth; but an elegant parcel of roast apples in filo pastry made up for this. Good food in comfortable surroundings with a nod to hip, but none to pretension: we think The Britannia has the makings of a perennial favourite.

This place has the worse service I have ever experienced. Shame really - it has so much potential with such a large beer garden. We turned up for Sunday lunch at 12noon and were told they had started serving lunch, but 6 staff couldn't decide between them who was going to start work. Eventually someone took our food order at 12.15 (we were the ONLY customers in the pub). We got our food at 12.50pm after chasing the staff for 10 minutes. What really took the biscuit was that 4 of the staff came out into the beer garden each with a plate of Sunday roast and started eating whilst us customers waited another 15 minutes for ours! We left at 1.30pm, not surpised that there were only 4 other customers in the whole place. We complained to the manager who proceeded to give his staff a dressing down whilst we we still there instead of sorting out our bill. Worse still was that the food was not really worth the wait - roast potatoes were cold and beef was tough. There was only one vegetarian option - the 4 pieces of gnocchi tasted fine, but obviously they didnt have much to spare. Compared to The Approach Tavern or even The Crown (the former is ususally standing room only on a Sunday at 1pm), this is a place that is just waiting to close down.

Yesterday on recommendation from Time Out, I booked a table for 4 for this evening at the Brittania and was told there would be no problem. We rang again today to add a couple more guests and were told that the whole of the pub and restaurant were closed as there was a wedding.
Had the cab booked for 7 for us all and would have turned up looking forward to eating and would have been mightily upset. I am still upset that no one rang me even though I gave them my mobile number.
