In the grand dining room of the Polish Hearth Club, diners enjoy lightly modernised Polish cuisine under the watchful eye of portraits of revered sons -- and daughters -- of the old country. The clientele is a relaxed mix of faithful diners who have been coming here since it opened in 1943 and a much younger, even studenty, crowd. The menu changes quarterly. Recent favourites include barszcz czerwony, or beetroot soup, and lamb shashlick in tomato and tarragon sauce. Beware the vodka list, with its sixteen devilish potions. Very nice, succinct wine list for the faint of heart. Try for a terrace table for balmy days.
