  • Dexter's - Clapham

  • The following information has been provided by a Time Out partner. Time Out cannot guarantee its accuracy. We welcome your views on this restaurant.

  • Dexters is the American place among a clutch of chain restaurants on Clapham's Abbeville Road. The look is decidedly New York - dark wood, black and red furnishings, and monochrome photos of James Dean, Marilyn and co. You're pretty much guaranteed a laid back, friendly atmosphere because the crowd is more often than not made up of regulars; young families by day, and a slightly more grown up set at night when the lights are dimmed. Pick of the menu is the chargrill steaks and burgers. And from the junior menu, fish and chips, and hot dogs. Weather permitting, it's nice to sit on the handful of tables outside.

Up until we had finished eating I would have rated this 3 stars as the food was quite good for the price. But as soon as we had finished eating the service went downhill fast and in the end we had to wait with empty drinks about 40 minutes until we had the bill and we could leave. During this time the 2 front of house staff were rushed off their feet dealing with the two of us and one other table of 3 people, well that and sweeping the floor as well. Could have been a repeat visit but the service let this one down badly in the end.
