  • Those who find the act of sitting in a regular restaurant a bit boring should experience Sen Nin Teppanyaki Restaurant in Islington. Never heard of Teppanyaki-style eating? Guests share tables surrounding a large hot plate, where theatrical Japanese chefs whirl, twirl, juggle, flip and flame raw ingredients into delectable meals. Set menus offer outstanding value, where diners can choose from a range of fresh meat or seafood along with soup, rice and vegetables. Chilled or hot sake is a must on the side, or you can choose from their range of Japanese inspired cocktails. Sushi, sashimi and tempura are also on offer, along with a special flame-grilled fruit dessert that’s well-worth saving room for.

We had the Summer Sizzler menu on the 50% off deal. The appetiser consisted of two pieces of sushi roll (slightly warm, rather than chilled), a salad garnish, two small spring rolls and two gyoza. I'd hazard a guess that the latter two were ready made frozen, having had both in Japan. This was followed by chopped veg fried, vaguely reminiscent of my own not massively successful stir fries, and a sort of special fried rice on the hot plate. For the main course we chose squid, prawns and steak. These were all very tasty and the steak particularly tender, although not up to the exceptionally high standards almost universal in Japan. The dessert was a very creamy ice cream with half a strawberry as garnish or green tea. However, the service from our Thai (?) waitress was attentive and the chefs top entertainment value with their culinary tricks, deft knife work and juggling of implements. If you want a fun evening, huge portions and you are not looking for top notch Japanese cuisine, you won't be disappointed. If you are looking for an authentic experience and the best of Japanese cooking, this isn't it. Without the discount, I'd say it was on the expensive side, all considered.

I am very annoyed as a japanese if people in this country think Sen-nin is an authentic Japanese restaurant.
    The food is terrible here.
I'd say it's best to avoid non-Japanese run Japanese restaurants as they are usually not good at all.
