Along Charing Cross Road lies a series of restaurants with seriously short lifespans – but judging by the food, Malaysia Kopi Tiam is one to stick around. While the ‘coffee shop’ (kopi tiam) purports to serve Malaysian and Thai cuisine, it’s clearly the former that excels. Kangkong (morning glory, a type of water spinach) stir-fried with belachan (fermented shrimp paste) was superbly savoury and with a nice chilli tingle at the end. Many of the diners around us were tucking into Hainanese chicken rice – tender slabs of poached chicken served with excellent fluffy rice cooked in chicken broth, and a small bowl of chicken soup on the side. The staff bumble about, but are perfectly charming – just think twice about saying yes to their offer of seating you upstairs… unless you like sitting in a room usually used for raucous karaoke.

LOVED this place. I had a craving for ice kachang and this was the only place in London I found. We had belacan okra, hananese chicken rice, roti and a tofu appetizer, and of course the ice kachang that I'd been thinking about all day. All were delicious and the staff and especially the host were super friendly and very sweet to our little girl. Best roti I've ever had. They have separate Malaysian and Thai menus. Really glad we tried it, will definitely be back before summer ends so we can sit outside again. All the other Asian places on that street looked good as well.
Was looking for Malaysia food and went to Champor-Champor but was told there were fully booked. We were wondering around and spotted a Malaysia flag near Charring Cross Road and were seated infront of the kopitiam by a friendly Uncle Ong since we wanted to smoke. Had the cantonese friend noodles and fish head noodles and it was perfect. Exactly the same as the ones you'll find in Malaysia if not better and being Malaysian myself, I know what authentic Malaysian food is. Try the homemade tau foo fah for dessert, you won't regret it. Service was quick and spot on. Will definately go there again next time I'm in London.
Don't be fooled by it's outward appearance. This little restaurant is a gem. The Nasi Goreng was very authentic and the seafood Laksa was spot on. This is the best Malay food I've had in London and with quality that could easily go for triple the price. The staff was welcoming and the drinks were very interesting. Try the iced red bean or lychee. All this for £25.
The place was really busy when I was there last night (8th May 2009) with friends. We were seated up-stairs as the ground floor was full. Not that bad really being seated up-stairs which was also full of diners. We had both Malaysian and Thai dishes and the food was truly Malaysian and Thai taste. Reasonable prices and the ABC Ice-kachang was great ! Will definately go there again.
