  • fish!

  • A gleaming window on to Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market, fish! continues to reel in a cultured crowd who like to know the provenance of their fish supper. All the glass and chrome makes the restaurant a bright place for lunch on a gloomy winter day, but a bit sweaty in warm weather. The routine hasn’t changed much since the (greatly diminished) chain first burst on to the scene. You choose from the list of fish of the day, the way you want it cooked and a sauce. We prefaced our choice with crisp Thai crab cakes served with sweet chilli sauce and a lot of rocket, plus a disappointingly watery fish soup. Organic grilled salmon steak and salsa verde, with a seasonal veg selection of pak choi, carrot and fennel, proved a great choice. As always, the battered (Icelandic) cod and chunky chips with mushy peas was a comforting plateful. Pleasantly not-too-sweet, date-filled sticky toffee pudding and good vanilla ice-cream signed off a decent but unremarkable meal served by friendly, unflurried staff.

Small portions, inattenive staff, over cooked and exspensive

We attempted to eat at this restaurant last Friday. I came with my two month old baby in a very narrow buggy. We asked for a table and the stoney-faced waitress in the reception made us feel extremely unwelcome when she pointed out at ´how much space our buggy would take´. I can totally accept that a restaurant may not have an available table for a buggy, but I don´t expect to be treated with such a lack of respect. Worse than that, when faced by this attitude, my friend insisted on leaving the restaurant, the waitress in the reception had no problems in showing she could not care less... and when we pointed out that we were going to post a review about their restaurant, she confronted us by saying that ´we could do this and complain to the manager if we wished´and insisted on us taking two restaurant cards for this purpose.
No matter the food, the service in this restaurant makes you loose your appetite.
