London's best review, food and drink news
This immensely popular BYO curry house (and takeaway), on a seldom-explored Vauxhall backstreet, is run with charm – and plenty of chat – by the Dawood family. The order of the day is homely Indian-West African dishes, prepared with care, plenty of fresh ingredients and none of the bland, formulaic sauces that afflict many a neighbourhood Indian. The masala fish (Wed-Sat only, £4.25), an East African curry, is the stuff of local legend: chunks of tilapia fish are marinated at length before being cooked in a rich, freshly seasoned sauce to gratifying effect. The specials board warrants your close attention: look out for (really very special) dahl makani, black lentils slow-cooked in butter, and the lighter green banana curry. Grab your beers at the off licence next door, and book at weekends – Hot Stuff has an army of local fans and only 25 seats.
Time Out Cheap Eats in London Guide 2007
London's best review, food and drink news
I am funny, kind, caring, sexy and outgoing. Just moved to the area so thought I would give this a go. I like going out to parties, bars, cinema,...
Why is the 'official' review of this restaurant only 3 stars, when the only negative was the lack of seating?!
For the past year, I've stuffed myself at Hot Stuff regularly, and have never once been disappointed. The service is outstanding and personable and the food is simply unbeatable. Best Indian in London.
A great place for cheap eats. Very good Indian food, freshly cooked in an open kitchen. 3 of us ate an *enormous* meal for £39. A bargain, and we bought booze from next door's off licence.
Caff style interior might put some off, but it was fine for us, and we ate at tables on the pavement. The highlight was charming and amusing service.
I will go back, but probably not the sort of place you take someone over 25 for a first date or your in-laws for a treat...basic and fun though!
My boyfriend and me thought the food was absolutely great: fresh, original in it's taste and such value for money is seldom seen in London restaurants. The service was also very friendly &personal and we liked the fact that the place was small and not the usual food-chain typical "assembly hall".
The ambience is colourful and warm although some kind of curtain to the kitchen would add to a better atmosphere. It's like having a present put in front of you with no paper or with somekind of wrapping that doesn't give away all it's secrets or the process of it's creation straight away. But apart from this it was a really great experience which will soon be repeated.
