The good news is that Masaledar is one of London's best-value Pakistani restaurants, with excellent East African Asian cooking and a BYO policy. The bad news is that it's Tooting's worst-kept secret, and is perenially packed with customers queuing to sit in or takeaway. If you don't mind the wait and the bustle, the food is a real treat. Masaledar's specials include achari gosht, lamb cooked in pickling spices that give it an appealing sour tang; and marage, a red kidney bean curry with an earthy heat that's nicely matched with doughnut-like mandazi bread. Masala aubergine is meltlingly soft and unctuous, and the pilau rice is food-colouring-free, flavoured with cumin and browned onions. Make sure you try the fresh passion fruit juice, which is simply sublime.

Some friends bought me here about 3 years ago and I had the best chicken tikka bhuna ever. I have never found another one that topped it. I was in London last weekend and visited Masaledar again to see if the chicken tikka bhuna was as good as I remember (and it wasn't the beer and good company that I was in) and I was right, it tops them all. Actually, all of the food that I have had there is the best that I've had in any Indian restaurant. Great value for money, good service and you can bring your own beer.
