Beatroot has been providing Sohoites with reliable, healthy eats for over a decade. Cheerful staff dole out generous portions of hot dishes and salads from behind the counter. Grab your choice as a takeaway, or eat it at one of a handful of acid-green and sunny-orange wooden tables. Various salads bursting with interesting veg and dressings include red-cabbage coleslaw with fresh dill, a seasonal celeriac and radish number, and greek salad with feta (one of the few instances of non-vegan ingredients used). Among the ten hot dishes were chunky moussaka, lentil shepherd’s pie, gently spiced cauliflower and potato curry, a gingery tofu stir-fry and sausage rolls (a bit burnt when we last went, but that’s not a regular occurrence). A raspberry and coconut flapjack was lip-smackingly sweet and salty but didn’t hold together too well and skimped on the fruit. The constant stream of customers features all the characters that Soho attracts: alternative types, Berwick Street record-store browsers and regulars from the surrounding offices. A handy spot for a quick, filling lunch in the centre of town.
