West Hampstead has its share of routine, typical-local pizzerias, tandooris and the like, so Walnut comes as an attractive break from the norm. The dining room is stylish, with chic high-backed chairs leading up, as if in homage, to the raised open kitchen, where you can see chef-owner Aidan Doyle doing his stuff. His cooking is distinctive, and makes much use of locally sourced, rare-breed and organic ingredients; presenting such sophisticated menus all week in a neighbourhood restaurant shows real dedication. Fine-textured seared scallops in sesame and soya dressing were lovely. Another starter, confit of duck with raspberry dressing, was a little overcooked, but still interesting. Steaks seem to be a highlight. A New Forest ribeye was perfect: prime meat grilled just right, with very moreish garlic butter. Braised pork shank was less impressive, but was offset by an unusually subtle little bowl of sauerkraut instead of time-honoured apple sauce. There’s plenty to explore too in the wine list, with an above-average choice of half bottles. Prices, however, are also above the local norm, especially since most vegetables come as side dishes, for £3-plus.

My lamb was too raw for me to enjoy and I found most of the food over salted and therefore obliterated the taste. Gravalax, dessert and home made bread were good. Was surprised that they had no organic beer or lager.
I made a booking with Walnut Restaurant, but I never had a chance to appreciate the food because of the appalling way they treated my reservation. Not only did they accept the booking knowing that the restaurant will be closed, but they also got my name and contact number wrong. They claimed that the attempt to contact me had been made, which I highly doubt since the explanation given by the owner contradicted the one given by the waitress.
I received an apology from the owner. The whole experience left a nasty taste in the mouth. To be honest I personally think that for a restaurant of that level the mistake is simply too severe.
Fabulous Restaurant. I live locally and regularly eat at the Walnut - it is my favourite restaurant in the area, with a fantastic selection of starters and mains, not to mention the delicious desserts. On my last visit I had scallops (which I always have because they are cooked to perfection) and a special of Marlin, which again was incredible.
I always find the food to be exceptional with very knowledgeable staff who are always on hand to help if needed.
I would highly recommend this restaurant and the lime and passionfruit souffle! I like the fact that whatever you choose, you know you won't be dissapointed
