London's best review, food and drink news
Located between the gilded arches of Chinatowns main drag, and named after the new-age fad based on an ancient Chinese art, this Cantonese restaurant festooned with red lanterns may not appear a promising option. Dont be quick to dismiss it. Feng Shui Inn is a self-styled family restaurant and serves some of the best and truest dishes in the neighbourhood, with friendly prices too. Like a quintessential Chinese host, our waitress recommended her favourite dishes with pride, describing ingredients and cooking methods with enthusiasm. The Cantonese-style steamed whole sea bass was faultless, its perfectly cooked flesh sliding off the bone with the nudge of a chopstick. Deep-fried salt and pepper squid succeeded where so many others fail: chewy yet soft, crisp without being oily. The best testament to the restaurants authenticity was the steamed tofu custard topped with seafood and vegetables. Listed only on the Chinese menu, it was a silky, subtle, sensory delight. Service was warm, efficient and relaxed, allowing us to linger over a bottomless pot of tea despite the crowds forming at the door.
