London's best review, food and drink news
Well away from Islington's main drag, and with suburban-style half-timber and plaster walls, Viet Garden is unlikely to stop trendsters in their tracks. We were charmed, though, by the friendly service from one of the two sisters who run the restaurant. She recommended the pork kho, and when it came we could see why the flavoursome, slow-cooked meat is a winner with regulars. The golden pancake starter, while obviously made with plenty of fresh ingredients, lacked flavour. Compensating, though, was the salt and pepper fish: crisply fried chunks of cod given ample zing by a sprinkle of dill and chilli. Bun xa noodles, tossed with salad and chicken, was also a winner, as was beef in tamarind sauce, which got the sweet-sour balance just right.
