Tired of the over-the-top Road to Marrakech tat beloved of many Moroccan restaurants in London? Original Tagines has an altogether more aesthetically pleasing approach. Sunny yellow walls are decorated with shimmering golden calligraphy, and intricate mosaic and ironwork tables spill on to the front terrace on warm evenings. Starters are imaginative: try gently braised kidneys; broad beans in a garlicky cumin-infused tomato sauce; or briouats filled with cheese or kefta (minced lamb). To follow, you’ll find the standard selection of tagines and couscous, but there’s a certain lightness here that means you won’t end up feeling stuffed. Lamb tagine with almonds and prunes, subtly spiced with cumin and cinnamon, would have benefited from a more robust sauce. In contrast, couscous royale was just as it should be: tasty chicken, lamb and merguez, flavoursome broth, tender veg, and light, fluffy couscous. Rice pudding with orange-flower water, and almond briouat are among the tempting desserts. The wine list is fairly priced and includes Moroccan labels. With its serene decor, high food standards and appealing, laid-back vibe, Original Tagines is a cut above its competitors.
