Chicago-style chain Smollensky’s may have launched a sister restaurant at Canary Wharf and mini Metro offspring outlets across half of outer London, but this flagship basement steakhouse remains the daddy. The look is modern and the service slick but the place still seems to be in the grip of a minor identity crisis. With its live band and cocktails, it wants to attract groups of twentysomethings and the pre-theatre crowd, while still keeping its core family diners happy. Luckily, it’s a cavernous space, so the kiddies, cake and balloons can commandeer one end while the DINKS have a drink at the other. The emphasis is on steaks: any size, any way. Ours were big, juicy, cooked to order – and, at £14.95 for an 8oz (227g) Scottish rump, fair value. Diners have the option of either 21-day aged Aberdeen Angus or 35-day aged South American, both from welfare-assured producers. Starters can be hit and miss, but desserts are enticing and the wine list not bad.

I'm an easy going smiley artist :) I like travelling & experiencing other cultures (just got back from a round the world trip! Japan, Cuba, Brazil....
Had a great meal here in July for my daughter's 13th birthday. It was an early sitting as we were off to see a show afterwards, but the minute we arrived, we were made to feel welcome - the balloons around the table added to the enjoyment of the occasion. The food was great and all the kids enjoyed starters, mains and desserts. The two younger kids had great little party bags which kept them occupied in-between courses. The additional 'sparkler' and a rendition of Happy Birthday also went down a treat! Timings were spot on and we left in plenty of time to get to the theatre on time. We would highly recommend this restaurant to friends and family in the future.
Not a patch on the restaurant it used to be. A refurbishment has removed all the character and tends towards the "Pack 'em in" ethos. The service used to be superb, but is now hurried. The food, which used to be mouth-watering, is still OK; good even, but over priced. There is a 12.5% service charge added on to the bill that this restaurant does not live up to.
