  • Christopher's

  • The greatest asset of this Covent Garden favourite has always been the building in which it is housed. A handsome Victorian pile, the structure is reputed to have served as a papier-mâché factory, a casino, a whorehouse and a bank before Christopher Gilmour converted it into a restaurant at the start of the 1990s. From the lovely, buzzy downstairs cocktail bar up the sweeping staircase to the cultured first-floor restaurant (offering precious views across Waterloo Bridge), this is bona fide destination dining. Unfortunately, though we’ve eaten well here in the past, the quality of the dining is currently failing to match the eye-catching destination. The food’s not awful: it’s just bland, slightly tired and entirely overpriced. After an above-par cobb salad, californian black bean soup didn’t hold the interest, meat loaf fell far short of its £17 price-tag, and a salmon fish cake was nothing out of the ordinary. You’re probably on safer ground with the long-venerated range of steaks. Still, at £34 for surf ’n’ turf, you’ll almost certainly get more culinary bang for your bucks elsewhere.

    ‘Herbal Remedy’
Feeling fractious after our commute into the West End, and with a big shop ahead of us, the words ‘Martini Bar’ beckoned. A little pick-me-up perhaps? Could we? Why not? It was our 11th wedding anniversary after all. Not too mention, a good minute or two into the P.M.
Passing through the majestic doorway was, in itself, a revivifying experience. My crusty commuter scales fell away, and by the time I’d perched down on the velvety cushions, of our plinth-like booth, I was feeling rather princessy.
The view was fabulous. I’ve sampled a few. You could even call me a collector. But this little vista was quite unique. A line of traffic, black cabs and wobbly red buses, trudging passed the Lyceum Theatre, and all the way across Waterloo Bridge. All the hubbub, colour and chaos motioned passed us in ethereal silence, as we sat at the splendid sash window, perfectly cosseted and slightly aloft.
To the menu. Wow. Huge. All the delights of the modern and the ancient worlds in one veritable almanac of martini cocktails. Riveting, illuminating, transporting. And remember, this is before you’ve even ordered a drink.
We opted for the ‘Herbal Remedy’ and, if you’re looking for an emotional detox, you should too. Very uplifting and absolutely scrumptious. I was so impressed by the ingredients. I had to text them to myself. I’m sure Mr Christopher won’t mind if I list them here. “Hendricks gin shaken with Jagermeister, Kummel Wolf Schmidt, pomegranate juice and dash of Peychaud’s bitters”.
If that sounds like the good life to you, go to Christopher’s bar. Explore the cocktail menu and find your inner martini.
Apparently they do food too (!!!)

My husband and I went to Christopher's for the pre theater menu. The service was excellent and all three courses were delicious. We would definitely recomend it to anyone who wants good food and value for money in a top class setting. we'll be going again.

Lovely service and atmosphere. Cocktails well presented and tasty. We should have booked a table as it was very crowded and we had to move tables because of a lack of space. They could have been faster bringing the bill at the end of the night

This is a terrific restaurant. The cocktail bar downstairs is a great start to the evening and the restaurant upstairs has a great ambience. The food is always of a consistently high standard and the steaks in particular are excellent. We often come here post theatre as you never feel as if you are being rushed no matter how late it is. Highly recommended!

Had a fantastic pre-theatre meal here. The set menu was varied and great value, the food was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. And we loved the Martini bar for drinks before we sat down for dinner!

Absolutely fantastic, the food was gorgeous and the atmosphere was brilliant. The Martini bar was very ambient with the low lighting and candles, the choice of drinks was amazing. Upstairs in the restaurant the waiting service was very professional and efficient would definitely dine there again. The only problem was the tables were quite close together and the people next to us could hear everything we were saying and vise versa, other than that it was a perfect night. Highly recommended.

I went to Christopher's recently with some work colleagues. We started in the cocktail
bar, and sampled some of their brilliant selection of very well made cocktails. Nice
    atmosphere in the bar too.
Dinner was excellent. Great variety of dishes, great presentation, although I was a
little diappointed by the size of my desert, but all round excellent quality. Service was
attentive without being overbearing, and they happily changed my drink without fuss when
    a mistake was made.
Would recommend Christopher's for an excellent evening out, but save up first as it is a
little on the pricey side, but certainly justified.
