Operating as a fish and chip shop since 1874, this Covent Garden fixture is now run by a friendly Greek family. They serve classic English grub to tourists, local workers and anyone who knows their chips. The walls are covered in West End theatre posters, and the vibe is busy. On the ground floor, all tables are frequently taken (remember to check if there are seats available in the basement dining room), and the outside seating is popular in summer. At times, the fish could be fresher, but it comes perfectly fried in well-seasoned, crunchy batter and is served with fantastic, chunky chips. There’s a small selection of starters including calamares, houmous, and chilli king prawn rolls. For those not after traditional fish main courses, a choice of saveloys, chicken nuggets and pies awaits. English desserts, including a steaming hot sticky-toffee pudding, come with ice-cream or a dollop of bright-yellow custard. Takeaways are fairly priced; eating-in carries a surcharge.
