The people behind this small and easy-going café clearly understand the concept of a hangover hangout. With soul on the stereo, a full rack of newspapers and comfort food par excellence on the menu, the Pavement is the sort of place you come in for a (Fairtrade) coffee and end up staying in for the rest of the afternoon, chowing your way through a huge veggie fry-up (£5.75) before moving on to the contents of the bounteous cake counter. There's nothing radical about the decor – chunky wooden tables and chairs – or the menu, which has all the café classics covered, including all-day breakfasts, baked potatoes, freshly made sandwiches (check out the loaded triple-deck club sandwich, £5.75) and soup. If that last oat-sprinkled muffin was a snack too far, go horizontal on Clapham Common, just metres away.
