London's best review, food and drink news
We keep returning to this branch of Pâtisserie Valerie, but more for its quirky atmosphere and first-floor views on to Old Compton Street life than for its pâtisserie. If appearances mean anything, it delivers the goods with an impressive glass counter crammed with sumptuous gateaux, flans, tartlets, mousse cakes and cute little marzipan figurines. If you're a late riser, this spot serves breakfast until 4pm, and the lunch menu – although hardly outstanding – offers salads, quiches, omelettes and light bites. On our last visit, afternoon tea was a combination of hits and misses: a wedge of tiramisu gateau delivered the goods, but an accompanying strawberry cheesecake was let down by cream that was anything but fresh. Good service made up for shortfalls on the table.

London's best review, food and drink news
Have been visiting the Pattiserrie Valerie branches for years but in the last two years have found their service poor and not in keeping with the reputation this chain commands. Friends and family have been made to wait more than half an hour for service and last Sat, after waiting for 1/2 an hour myself with guests from out of town, left because the waitress could not be bothered to take our order. She was only concerned with the fact it was half and hour from closing time. This was experienced at most of the branches. Punters should know there are better places to spend their money, no matter how nice their cakes and food are.
