  • Refettorio

  • This hotel restaurant (part of the Crowne Plaza) has become deservedly popular among the City slickers who flock here at lunchtime for cheese and charcuterie platters featuring lesser-known specialties imported from all over Italy. Thanks to its mostly business clientele, Refettorio seems to get away with steep prices, since only those on expense accounts wouldn’t flinch at the £3.60 charge for the (admittedly scrumptious) bread basket. Pasta and risotto are the kitchen’s main strengths. Traditional dishes like orecchiette, the traditional ear-shaped pasta from Apulia, are given a contemporary twist with simple sauces like peas, pancetta and cherry tomato confit. Those wishing to sample more classic Italian fare might choose from own-made egg tagliatelle with ragù or summery spaghetti al crudo, where fresh tomatoes, black olives and anchovies are added to just-drained pasta. Main dishes can be underwhelming and are no match for the pasta. For dessert, try Sicilian cannoli filled with ricotta and topped with hazelnut ice-cream. The Italian staff are full of smiles and remain charming even at busy times. Some Italian products are available to purchase from the deli at the entrance.

Eep! I have never done this before and it scares me somewhat. How am I supposed to sell myself (not in a prostitutey way) and yet not be up myself?...
