Cây Tre
Bright little Cây Tre is set amid the hustle and bustle of Old Street. Its menu offers some rarely seen (even in Shoreditch) Vietnamese dishes that, to indicate their authenticity, are marked with small smiley faces. The speciality of the house, cha ca la vong (sliced monkfish with fennel and dill, marinated in galangal and saffron), was fried at the table for us by the happy waitress. Combined with rice vermicelli and fermented shrimp sauce (pungent and sour), this appetiser for two produced a luscious fusion of different, typically Vietnamese aromas. Unfortunately, the meal went downhill from there. Canh chua soup (spicy and sour soup with beansprouts, pineapple, celery and taro stems) was refreshing yet unspectacular in flavour, and the white fish had a rather unpleasant rubbery texture. A shame.
