Walking into Rebato’s feels like entering another world, or at least another part of it. An uninviting exterior shields those inside from passers-by. This may suggest you won’t get a warm welcome, but inside you can expect bull-fighting posters, football memorabilia, dim lighting and an old-school taverna, so pull up a stool by the bar or grab one of the velvety benches around it. As is often the case in Spain, tapas were already prepared when we visited. Some were on display and nearly all arrived at the table within microwave minutes. The albóndigas, champiñones al ajillo and pulpo (meatballs, garlic mushrooms, and octopus) were nevertheless very fresh tasting. Grilled sardines arrived later, of course (straight from the grill), and serrano came sliced from a haunch on full and succulent view. Families, couples and friends all happily co-exist in these laid-back surroundings – Rebato’s is a real favourite with locals. Beyond the bar, you’ll find a leafy, candlelit restaurant that’s perfect for a more intimate evening, with a full menu and dessert trolley to tempt.

Oooh horrors! Ok, so, I live in south London in my own really quite small flat. I do not have a cat but long for a dog. I only learnt to drive last...
