  • Trattoria La Ruga

    Budget choice
  • Some people find the lack of a printed menu or wine list at La Ruga pretentious. Others find it shows a commitment to serve only fresh, seasonal, carefully-sourced and uncomplicated produce. We're in the latter camp. Half a dozen choices for each course are chalked up on boards, in Italian; then you wait for the friendly staff to explain the ingredients. Starters might include a simple rocket salad or spaghetti with prawns in a rich tomato sauce, while fish is given equal billing to meat among the mains. Roasted seabass and a swordfish steak served with a piquant lemon dipping sauce were recent standouts. Service is unhurried and the many regulars know that characterful owner Peter will simply pull up a chair for a chat if there's any delay.

a great local restaurant - a real gem with a seriously talented chef. service has improved since a change in ownership a couple of years ago.

I went to La Ruga for the first time in a while a couple of months ago and it seemed unchanged under the new owner. Didn't notice particularly slow service like others on here. Food was good and, though quite pricey on the face of it, was good value as veg and potatoes are thrown in. My main complaint, as with the previous owner, is that the wine is expensive for what you get. There's nothing under about £16 and that tastes like it cost them about £4.

This is a lovely restaurant in Walthamstow! My food was absolutely delicious - melt in the mouth gnochi to start, followed by some tasty tuna. I would absolutely recommend this a place to eat in E17.

Fantastic evening, first time for me and definately returning, great to know we have a special place nearby now. Food excellent and well priced, £60 for two with drinks makes it an occassional treat for us but well worth the money.

Yes, a little bit more expensive but you get what you pay for. Excellent food and good service and a nice atmospere, if you fancy a treat in Walthamstow this is the place.

La Ruga has been a regular local treat night out for us over the years, so was the obvious choice for my partners birthday. Whilst expensive we have always had an enjoyable meal, so was quite disappointed to visit last week.
The service which is normally excellent was very slow. In itself not the end of the World to wait 30 mins before your order is taken but surprising when there are 3 front of house staff for 30 odd covers and drinks materialised at the speed of light. Would not have minded so much if an explanation given as we all have off days.
As we were hungry,we'd have been happy to have been given bread / olives to nibble on if there was a problem in the kitchen - which we supsect was the hold up - but had to wait 45 mins for these to arrive and then another 25 minutes for starters - we ordered pate and salad hoping that not needing cooking they would arrive quickly !
When our food arrived it was good, but not of the usual standard and not really value for money.
Such a shame as we really liked the restaurant - almost as much as Deborah (not the same new owner Deborah I presume ?). We'll probably give it another go, hoping that this was just a (very expensive) one off, but it will be a while.
On past experience would give 5 out of 6 stars but this time, I think 3 would be generous.

This has to be my favourite restaurant of all time. Service is always warm and friendly, food always great quality. Hard to find restaurants where everything from bread to chutneys are all handmade on the premises. My partner and I are never disappointed. New owners since 2007, fortunately haven't changed quality or staff and you no longer have to put up with Peter pulling up a chair.

After reading the positive reviews regarding Trattoria, I decided to visit the restaurant last week. Suffice to say I was bitterly disappointed with everything. The service was slow and somewhat nonchalant. The food was overcooked, my medium steak was well done and my friend's 'pink in the middle' tuna steak was dry and flaky. The prices were extravagant, £19 on average for a main course, expensive for the West End never mind East London. All the meals lacked imagination and taste - as an avid supporter of local fare I will not be going back and will stick to the other restaurants in Walthamstow.

This restaurant is a delight. The waiter was welcoming and very helpful. The food was great and I could have stayed forever. A bit pricey, but every once in a while you gotta treat yourself. I look forward to being able to go again.
