Named after a character from Mozart’s The Magic Flute, this flamboyant restaurant continues the operatic theme with ten individually styled opera boxes, velvet drapes, theatrical props and other colourful frippery. Food is Mediterranean-Turkish (cheese borek, grilled fish, kofte with rice, lemon tart), while the wine list starts at £13.50 for French house wines and hits the high notes with a good choice of champagnes. Established singers and up-and-coming stars from nearby opera houses sing at the cabaret every Monday and Sunday.

To begin with, this restaurant absolutely deserves more than two stars! First, the decoration, which is an eclectic and quirky collection of antiques, leaves your eyes wondering across the walls/ceiling (with always new detail to spot!). The food was perfect, both in quality, presentation, and portion size. We were also treated to a beautiful string quartet and various opera selections throughout the night. (But remember, live shows are only on Mondays and Sundays). Definitely recommend going at least once. Will fall in love for sure.
Spent £33 per person (with three course meal, wine, coffee, and live performance)
We stumbled over the restaurant a couple of weeks ago on a Friday before we went to Dirty Dancing and loved it! Although the food was'nt Michelin star it was great value and as soon as we sat down bread, dips and olives were placed on our table, we ordered a bottle of Champagne and it turned out to be a really fun restaurant with a great atmosphere!!! We had the pre-theatre menu and could not complain at all for £12. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone as it was great to be in the centre of London and not feel ripped off at all and just have a girly giggle. I would definitely go back just for the decor, location to the theatre!
I love Sarastro - last visit was for Sunday lunch a couple of weeks ago with family and everyone had a great time. Fantastic entertainment in the form of a string quartet followed by some beautiful opera singing. Great atmosphere, friendly waiters and fabulous decor. Very good value for a three course meal plus entertainment in Covent Garden for £19.50 - a steal!
I booked a table for 20 people for my birthday.
There was no fan or air conditioning that worked. We were all red in the face it was that hot. The seating was VERY cramped. Once I was sat down I couldn't get up for 2 hours. The service was slow and unprofessional. It was a set menu. For starters an awful shared meze with dry bread. For mains there were a few choices. I had the salom which was bland. The vegetarian pancake looked vile, swamped in cheese sauce.
There was a band that played what seemed like two songs on repeat, which then came to our table to BEG FOR MONEY.
We allowed 2 hours for our meal to take place as we were off to see a show afterwards. We ended up being late EVEN THOUGH WE ALL SKIPPED DESSERT (which came as a relief.) We didn't have time to argue or complain so we just paid the bill and left. It was too hot and cramped to argue.
It cost us £36 pounds EACH for a mealsy starter, a poor main course, NO DESSERT and one glass of wine. It's only merit was the decor which made me consider it in the first place. Don't go. You'll be VERY disapointed.
