Canela means cinnamon in Portuguese, which explains why you’re given a quill of the spice when ordering a coffee here. Stir it in for a subtle Christmassy flavour. It’s a charming tradition at an equally charming café-bar, which specialises in Portuguese and Brazilian food. Located just off Seven Dials, Canela has high ceilings, large windows and a grand chandelier that help it achieve an airy feel in a small space. The menu highlights Brazilian favourites including gluey cheese bread and rich feijoada (served with manioc flour). Portuguese cuisine is showcased with bacalhau (salt-cod), and creamy pasteis de nata (custard tarts). On our last visit we tried the vegetarian lasagne, which we deemed a rare hit; it came beautifully laced with stilton and packed with sweet roasted red peppers. We were also lucky enough to get a slice of the smooth, indulgent cheesecake that often sells out before midday. As prices are quite high, many customers only stop by for a drink, but these are drinks worth stopping for – refreshing caipirinhas and mojitos, as well as bright fresh juices, including the grape-coloured Brazilian açaí.

The service was awful. There were two persons attending people, wearing trainers and extremely serious, making the customer feel awkward. My salted cod had 7 (seven) bay leaves...a bit too much for my taste. Have of the plate was salad (dressed) and the other have the salted cod dish with much more potato than cod.
I will not come back. There are many nice restaurants out there with service and food far better than this.

Canela is the chic-est Brazilian eaterie in London. Go there!
I really love this place. The food is cheap, good quality and tastes like home cooking. I thoroughly recommend the meat board (delicious chorizo) and feijoada. The wine's pretty good too. Not to mention the chilled out atmosphere. All in all, excellent.
loved it. a great relaxed place. food is good but not over elaborate. like home cooking.
Popped in on a Thursday night for a meal with friends. Service was really slow and after nearly an hour we complained only to be told that there was one chef working in the kitchen, by this time we were really hungry and decided to leave (passing diners that had arrived after us tucking into
their meals!). Really frustrating experience and I had to prompt the waiter to give us a discount on the drinks bill. Left without eating! Never going back.
