A night at the dogs entails an awful lot of whiling away time in between very brief races – and, of course, a lot of time spent betting. Dinner in one of the grandstands is a good alternative way to pass the time and need not mean soggy hotdogs and plastic cups. There are three main places to eat; one a fast-food takeaway, the other two proper dining areas complete with waitress service. For some events, there’s a black tie dress code in the smartest of the two dining areas, Star Attraction, which has tiered seating overlooking the track. The menu is surprisingly sophisticated, comprising modern, French-accented food from a three-choice prix fixe menu. Broadway suits more sociable, intimate occasions, with tables of four or six arranged so diners are facing one other, and races shown on monitors. Bookings in either eaterie include admission, race card and a three-course meal, starting at a very reasonable £20. Bookable extras to add to your night include tote vouchers, champers, race sponsorship and a pre-paid bar tab.
