  • Thai Square

  • The ship-like copper and granite structure that surveys Putney Bridge from the west makes an architecturally impressive, if unlikely, venue for a branch of this above-average chain. Its two floors (bar downstairs, first-floor restaurant) are spacious, but there were precious few empty tables on our visit. No doubt the high-quality Thai cooking has something to do with that. An extensive menu of appetisers, curries, stir-fries and chef’s specials makes choosing hard, but we were rewarded by our selection of ‘royal Thai-style’ dim sum (a mixture of chicken, prawn and vegetable steamed dumplings) and a superb seafood salad (squid, mussels, scallops and king prawns with glass noodles and a delicious hot-salty-sour dressing). ‘Drunken duck’ was an unfamiliar but successful stir-fry of Thai aubergine, sweet basil, chillies, bamboo shoots, lemongrass and Thai whisky. A prawn green curry was the only disappointment: far too sweet, the taste of palm sugar obscuring any piquancy or tang. We reckon there’s more meat-free choices than any other Thai in town, too. Sweeping river views and efficient, smiling service boost Thai Square’s appeal still further.

I'm sorry to say my experience could not be further from the Guide's article. From asking in the bar if the mango juice on the list was fresh or from a carton, which involved checking with three levels of staff, and provided a negative answer, to trying to charge £1 for the tap water I asked for in my drink (as a "mixer!), the evening went downhill. This is a very large restaurant, at a guess 120 covers. When we arrived, at 8.15, it was empty. About half an hour later, a group of three (quite loud) businessmen were seated immediately to one side of us, so that our chairbacks bumped. The rest of the huge room still empty. Some minutes later, a couple were seated to the other chairback-bumping side. Service very slow, food very average, in small portions, and in no way worth the price. The one plus was that, on the third request, the very loud music was turned down. By the time we left our cramped trio of tables, two other tables were occupied at the other end of the room.
    Avoid.
