Subtle isn’t the word to describe Chakalaka. Its frontage is a zebra-painted riot, and internal space is given over to tribal shields and dead animal skins. Such an attitude also extends to the menu, most prominently with the £25 challenge: eat a 25oz (700g) steak in 25 minutes and get a free T-shirt. Come here too if you’re into competitive artery-blocking; the all-you-can-eat ribs deal at weekends brings out the big boys. The menu is exceptionally meat-heavy, but has an intriguing South African twist. We tried crocodile and weren’t disappointed by the taste (something like frogs’ legs), and then enjoyed a cracking chargrilled kudu steak (like antelope). Fish also feature, but in general this is a carnivore’s paradise. The wine list contains some enticing South African bottles to pair with your meat. Chakalaka was exceptionally busy on our visit, with service occasionally getting a bit frantic, but the odd mistake was dealt with professionally (a complimentary glass of wine easing matters greatly). We left with a big smile and fond memories.

I am a veteran Chakalaka patron as I live in Putney and am South African. The food has always been great and the portions generous. However, something has changed at the restaurant. We went there again tonight as we often do, but suddenly the prices have been increased and the portions halved (I'm not exagerating). This was the first time I've left the restaurant feeling hungry. For £20 per person (excluding wine), there are better value for money restaurants within a 500 meter radius.
