A vegan restaurant with a health food shop attached, the SP has a Caribbean chef cooking Ital food (meaning vital, healthy and natural' in Rastafarian patois). The Ital dietary laws forbid the use of meat, poultry, fish, alcohol, cow's milk, coffee and sometimes even added salt. Despite these restrictions, our food was delicious. Tofu was sliced in wafer-thin squares, fried in tempura-like batter and topped with herbs and spices. Kale in coconut milk was creamy, with mineral overtones. Even the brown rice was plump, shiny and well seasoned. Tangy barbecued strips of gluten were particularly tasty. We're told the owners are looking for larger premises: good news, as the dining area consists of two poky rooms in the basement, and this cooking deserves a wider audience.

An English rose, petit, and cute, seeking her prince. I'm young at heart, and keep myself active. At the weekends I keep myself busy, if not...
The Spirited Palace provides a setting that is more akin to visiting a friend's house then a restaurant.
The main course consisted of a platter of about five dishes cooked that day and cost a reasonable £5.00
The dessert options included home made chocolate or vanilla cake with soya custard or vegan ice cream.
All this can then be washed down with a glass of home made ginger beer.
The eating area is at the end of a mini-labyrinth in the basement where there is seating for about 20 people in a very cosy room which has now been semi-divided.
The combination of excellent and mostly home-made, vegan fare accompanied by a very fast and friendly service makes this a very pleasurable and unique eating experience.
