• Ambassador

  • Who needs diplomatic relations with France when the Ambassador creates so well the food we hope to find there? A proper all-day café, with wide-open doors and tables outside, it is run with real commitment and devilishly close attention to detail. From the croissants in the morning, through lunch and the perfectly baveuse omelette (so rare this side of the Channel), to the chocolate marquise with spiced red wine syrup and vanilla ice-cream that rounds off dinner, it has never let us down. Don’t go expecting all Gallic. Yorkshire tea, bacon sandwich on proper thick slices of crusty white loaf, and the joyously seasonal likes of asparagus tart with mixed-leaf salad or plaice with jersey royals and baby leeks – all come at keen prices. A pudding of mango soufflé with passion-fruit sorbet would have been as at home on a stiff white cloth as on the dark green Formica table tops. Dream drinks include Hendrick’s gin and Hereford cider, Noilly Prat and a Manzanilla. Wines with France to the fore, from £14 a bottle and with many by the 50cl or glass (poured from the bottle at your table) are a source of wonder. But where’s our favourite aperitif Lillet got to?

I love this restaurant. I love everything about it, the casual friendly bar, the interesting food which takes account of the seasons, the service which others have mentioned. The wine list is fantastic - and if you need a bit of help Clive the owner will be pleased to talk to you about what he thinks is good in a very approachable way - and best of all this must be one of the few restaurants where they DONT constantly irritate you by pouring more wine in your glass when you are perfectly capable of doing it yourself. There are special nights with a chat from a favourite food supplier and if you are celebrating something just tell them and you get great inclusive treatment. I shall be going there again and again and again.

We dined there last night and thought it was fantastic. Food was great as well as being value for money and the service was excellent. Served by all of the waiting staff at various times (a nice touch) but never had to asked for anything. Would recommend highly.

I dinned there in August with three friends and I will never retun there: the food was neither original nor good, the restaurant was empty whereas it was a friday night, I felt as if I was in a kanteen. very disapointed by the time out critics...

I dined here last week and didn't think much of it. The wine wasn't brilliant for the price, and the beef was overcooked, fatty and chewy. Not worth it for the price, based upon my experience.

5 of us spent a truly superb evening at Ambassador last night. The service was just right. Not too attentive but someone always close by to assist and the food was all delicious and really well presented. You also really feel as you're getting value for money which is a rarity nowadays in London.
A great destination for a good meal for 2 or a group of you. Would highly recommend.

Quite the best restaurant I've been to in ages. Everything is brilliant; the food really delivers- a triumph of taste over presentation! But its the service that really puts it in a class of its own. It makes you realise how poor most other restaurants are in comparison. Attentive without being intrusive- and they leave the service charge to your discretion- I intend to keep going back.
