Le Comptoir Gascon’s modern rustic style (dainty velour chairs and exposed pipes contrast with open brickwork and pottery dishes) exudes class and confidence – as do most of the customers. In one corner is wedged a counter of precise cakes and pastries, shelves of artisan-made breads (the wholemeal sourdough is wonderfully light), and blackboard promoting the three foie gras terrines made on the premises, all of which adds to the posh café vibe. The French staff – unintimidating, practised, hard working, yet relaxed – bring minuscule black olives marinated with herbs. A special of scallop terrine had a delightful buttery flavour, cut with the acid warmth of piquillo sauce. Toulousian cassoulet featured creamy beans and knockout confit duck with lovely crisp skin. Appropriately chewy onglet came with traditional sauce bordelaise; overall the dish was rather so-what – something that can’t be said of the sensational chips, which are cooked in duck fat. We finished with an omelette gascon – a meringue bomb of ice-cream, armagnac and prune – and an ornate ‘chocolate flower’ torte. Dinky, rather close-set tables mean that the comfort factor is not that high, but this is one place that we always look forward to visiting.

Ah, I hate talking about myself. I'm a 35 year old living in london. I work weird hours so tend to party hard. I love going out, meeting friends....

I went for lunch today and it was fairly busy, despite Tuesday. The cassoulet was big, hearty and a fair price for a dish not readily available elsewhere. The starter salad was nice and again, being made with duck gizzards, not easily available elsewhere. Dessert also a big portion and the prices appropriate for the cooking and location. Service professional without the awful americanised approach some English servers try and never get right.
the pastries are lovely, food is tasty and fine(not the healthiest choice!)
Just had lunch here. Cassoulet. Appropriately hearty - I'm a big lad and I came away satisfied - and very, very tasty indeed. I'll be back.
good food but VERY EXPENSIVE.
For 50 pounds each we had ridiculous starters, a very tiny main course and a dessert to share. You are asked to leave 12,5% over the price for the service
This place is rubbish. Zero stars.
The servings are rediculously small, almost as if they hadn't ordered enough stock for the night.
And the house wine I ordered was amongst the most vile red wine I've ever encountered. A 2 pound bottle from Tesco's would be better quality.
I'd never go there again.
