• Suya Obalende

    Budget choice
  • Part of the Suya Express chain – an outfit that started life in a trailer in Elephant & Castle – this restaurant is almost totally hidden behind the counter of its streetfront takeaway. Dubbed the ‘African McDonald’s’, it’s hardly the place for a romantic tête-à-tête. The temperature, in true Nigerian style, is fridge-like, the crimson and black interior is chic but distinctly functional, and if the plasma screens aren’t showing noisy footie, music is played stompingly loud. However, this is a great place for large groups, plus anyone more interested in the authentic flavours of downtown Lagos – and value for money – than a sophisticated dining experience. Suya (lamb, chicken or beef skewers grilled over a charcoal fire) is the speciality, but the menu also stretches to stewed snails, crab claws, chicken gizzards and the occasional crocodile. There’s also asun (spicy goat chunks), pounded yam and moi-moi (steamed beancake). Meat dishes are accompanied by roast plantain, mounds of jollof rice, stewed spinach and a pungent chilli sauce. On Sunday there’s a ‘Grill Greedy’ buffet; the management slaps a hilarious £2.50 surcharge on anyone failing to clear their plate, the money going to Oxfam.
