In the heart of Dalston lies this popular Naija chop shop (for which read ‘Nigerian fast-food outlet’), affectionately known as the ‘African McDonald’s’. Don’t be put off: the name is only a reflection of the price and speed at which the food is served – lightning fast by Africa’s generally more relaxed standards. Specialising in suya (charcoal-grilled seasoned meat or fish), the restaurant behind the open-front grill in the takeaway section provides a fair menu of meat grills and other west African favourites. Options range from chicken to gizzards (popular offal in Africa), to the more adventurous crocodile. Our chicken suya was tender and plentiful, although the yams in the vegetarian asaro could have been softer. The handwash point is a great idea, as is the cheeky ‘plate tax’ (a £2.50 surcharge – donated to charity – for those not clearing their plate during the Sunday buffet). If you’re looking for ‘good food fast’ as the slogan says, this is worth a try.

Eep! I have never done this before and it scares me somewhat. How am I supposed to sell myself (not in a prostitutey way) and yet not be up myself?...
