  • E Pellicci

    Budget choice
  • Not just a caff, but a social club, taxi drivers’ meeting room and unofficial matchmaking service, E Pellicci has been warmly welcoming customers since 1900. The heritage-listed marquetry-panelled interior is cramped; sharing tables is to be expected, nay relished. An espresso machine customised with the Ferrari logo produces coffee and hot water for mugs of sweet builders’ brew. The good-value cooking includes traditional English and Italian dishes, sarnies and classic puds, and of course a roster of glistening fry-ups – everything from a set veggie breakfast to black pudding. Staff are amenable. (To pensioner: ‘One poached egg on one toast? You’re causing real trouble for the kitchen with that order, young lady.’ Pensioner giggles, delighted.) The chips are rightly renowned, though our bubble could have done with more vegetable bits. Some say Pellicci’s is now so famous it attracts too many posers, but that wasn’t a problem on our last visit.
PS In December 2008 former owner Nevio Pellicci Senior passed away. He was part of the institution of Pellicci's, and will be much missed. Pellicci's continues to be run by his son, Nevio Pellicci Junior.

Love this place. Definitely has an authentic old school caff feel. I try to make a visit there every time I'm in London ~once a year, and the staff always seems to remember me. Was originally taken here by a local, not your typical tourist. Will definitely go back as I love me a good old fry up. Sad to hear about Nevio Sr.

Been there a few times and enjoyed the food. However, i think all the publicity has gone to their heads, because the staff appear to think they are the centre of attention, blanking new customers for 10-15 minutes while they chat to all their "fans" and friends. I think they want you to grab their attention. The last time I went, I was prepared for the long wait and gave the staff no eye contact at all and read my Time Out magazine. The member of staff got quite annoyed and asked me if I was going to stay there all day without ordering. I was only there for 5 minutes! LOL!

I had heard good things about this place and thought I would treat myself this morning to a breakfast at this renovned establishment. Firstly it cost me £3 to park for 40 minutes, nearby and as a result I was wanting a quick service. I was ignored when I walked in by staff who were pre-occupied talking to customers. Afer 5 minutes I went up to the counter to order and ask for a menu, and I was told to sit down and that I would be served. The "maitre'd" then spent the next 5 minutes talking very loudly to customers and continued to ignore me. Everyone else in there seemed to be his mate and no one else needed serving! I told him I was on a parking meter and in a hurry so I then got served by a waitress. I ordered ham egg chips and bubble n squeak. But then 5 mins later a separate waiter came up and asked me "did I really want a fried egg on top of my omlette" ! The original waitress insisted that I had ordered this, so I had to defend myself. It was freezing and they had no heating. I eventually got my order - it was really quite poor. The ham was ok but everything was cold. I found the atmosphere really un friendly and the service terrible. To top it off, as I ws finishing my tea and had literally just put my fork down, the maitre'd finally paid me some attention and sarcasticly reminded me that I had said I was in a hurry, my 40 minutes were up on the car metre! It cost me £9. Never again, they dont feel they need to try.

We had lunch here in March 2008. Menu offers English and pasta dishes and classic puddings of the syrup sponge and custard variety, all home made, no frills and absolutely delicious.
