London's best review, food and drink news
Where to start? This much-loved primrose-coloured caff, owned by the Pellicci family for over a century, has played an integral role in the social history of the East End, providing a home-from-home for gangsters (the Krays), artists (Gilbert & George), taxi drivers, local workers and families. Customers are welcomed warmly by Nevio and family; if Nevio Junior is about, then good-natured ribbing of customers is par for the course. The art deco interior is grade II-listed (it was remodelled in 1946): think marquetry panelling, laminate wood tables, framed family portraits and bottles of traditional condiments. Pellicci has welcomed a fair few celebs over the years (David Schwimmer, Dizzy Rascal, Noel Gallagher), but the place remains a proper, good-value caff, serving quality fry-ups, traditional English and Italian dishes, sarnies and classic puddings. To many, indeed, this is more than a greasy spoon. As Eric Monster Hall like many customers, a regular since childhood, and our recent table companion put it, Pellicci is as much a social club as anything. London would be a sadder place without it.

We had lunch here in March 2008. Menu offers English and pasta dishes and classic puddings of the syrup sponge and custard variety, all home made, no frills and absolutely delicious.
