The Marquess is a dining destination, certainly, but unlike so many gastropubs has retained a relaxing, local-pub character. Even if you’re planning to feast on the signature joints of 28-day-hung Angus fore-rib chalked up by weight and price on the blackboard (and crossed off as each is nabbed), starters may be necessary as it’ll take at least 45 minutes for the beef, yorkshires, greens and roasties to appear. Pan-fried scallops with samphire (£3 each) was the star of our selection: prettily served on the shell and wallowing in garlicky butter sauce; their corals as sweet as the muscle meat. Puds are classic English comforts. All dishes are listed with beer and wine recommendations. In keeping with the policy of sourcing as close to home as possible, the wine list is European, but with a super cab sauv from central Spain at just £14.50 you needn’t fear the lack of New World bargains. Froach heather ale and Grozet, both from Scotland, are great accompaniments to food too. The Young’s range is on tap, plus the likes of Deuchars IPA. Although we were peeved at having to book via a website, in person the staff are amiable and intelligent. In July 2008, the pub was sold to an independent operator.

It's hard to know what to say here; how can I be original, charming and funny?!! So maybe best to just go for the bog standard approach. a bit...

used to be great, especially the forerib.
new owners have completely ruined it - and we tried it twice since just to make sure. Uninterested staff, most of the food items off by 830, no rib.
sorry marquess, you've lost us and by the looks of these reviews, most of the others
It was a hidden gem with excellent food and service, however, since it has changed management the food is not up to standard and it has almost 'sold out' with the set menus. The anticipation of what was fresh on the day, scribbled on the blackboard, was what gave it its charm. Its now become just another gastropub. The service was poor and the food arrived late and not to the standard I was used to at MT. The steak and ale pie was watery and flavourless as was the dessert. Unfortunately I won't be returning.
Dropped in for a quick after work pint on Wednesday night ended up staying for an unexpected but very welcome 3 course meal! They have a pri fixe menu which meant three courses is £15 and two courses is £12. We weren't the only ones that ended up dining, the people drinking at the table next to us looked over at our plates enviously before ordering the same thing. Really good value for the food. A really excellent mid week treat!
Hidden gem! My partner and I live locally we had no valentines plans nor did we feel like cooking so we decided to drop in to the MT on our way home. The waiter managed to fit us in for an early diner (the restaurant was fully booked) the food was yummy & good value, the service pleasant and the restaurant itself really very pretty. We had a surprisingly romantic diner. Will be back to try the roast.
Thank you Charlotte
Shambolic. Just dined at the Marquess Tavern on a prebooked, predetermined menu. The kitchen ran out of pastry for the pheasant pie so put slices of toast on top. Microwaved potatoes arrived 1/2 an hour late. Staff off and hand not at all apologetic. It plumbed new depths for poor service....
Got dragged to North London to the Marquess on Sunday for friend's birthday. She is a local and has been raving about the place for a couple of months. Had read some of the reviews on here and was not expecting much. However, we had a fab time. Food was great, the place was packed and the service was really nice. Not the quickest but very attentive. Best Sunday lunch I have had for a long time. The foreribs to share is a great idea for groups. Will definitely go back.
Having read the great review timeout gave this gastropub I was looking forward to a hearty dinner. However the night we went was apparently the first day of new management and a new menu and neither the chef nor the waiting staff seemed to know what they were doing. The rare steaks we had ordered came back very well done, so we sent them back only to be informed they were out of steak altogether- it was only 8pm!. The waiting staff were nice but this place needs to sort out it's kitchen. and it definitely doesn't deserve all the stars that Timeout has given it!
Not worth the detour.
We had high expectations for this pub and were sorely disappoitned. We took an impromptu detour on a Wednesday night, only to be told that the restaurant was fully booked ("the kicthen's only small"), but that we were welcome to wait for about 45 minutes and then "see if gets quieter" - what does that mean? And what must it be like at the weekend? We decided to wait, grabbed a table in the bar and tried to order a drink. We tried to get a menu, but to no avail, despite having told the host that we would stick around for food. It was difficult to get any kind of eye contact from the lacklustre, disinterested bar staff and after 20 minutes of standing at the bar waiting to be served by 3 bar staff when there were only 2 other people waiting to be served, we threw in the towel and left. I doubt we'll be back - there are just too many other places that do want our custom. Frankly, the food didn't look like anything special, either. We didn't see any of the dishes mentioned in the Timeout review. The food we did see looked ok, but was pretty standard - fish and chips, sausage and mash etc. Whilst I'm sure the standard is higher, you can get the same fare at your local Wetherspoons, and a lot quicker. The one star rating is purely for the decor.
Ate here on Sunday evening with a group of friends. Realised within the first 2 minutes that the service was going to be bad.
Although we received our table straight away nobody took a drinks order or provided a menu. After 10 mins I went to the bar but nobody seemed interested in serving me here either.
Later, I saw the waitress leave my glass of wine on a ledge next to our table whilst busying herself with several other tables.
After 4 of us ordered the steak the waitress finally brought over 2 roast dinners. Mistake in the kitchen apparently.
I can see the potential but the service was shockingly bad. They didn't get a tip from us.
The chef has changed. It’s now very average. On a recent visit our beef was overcooked, the vegetables and Yorkshires in short supply, the gravy watery and tasteless, the waitress rude, and the manager constantly in heated debate with the kitchen which clearly couldn’t cope. In fairness they did deduct our starters from the bill, but this did not nearly makeup for the fact that a friend’s birthday lunch was a total washout.
