• Castle

  • More a gastrobar than a pub, the Castle has a funky glamour thats wearing well. Scuffed leather banquettes, huge chandeliers and fairy lights combine with a massive music-video screen (silent) and chilled, offbeat soundtrack to pull in the local art students and slightly older bohemians with which Camberwell is richly populated. Many come for the vibe, the real ale (Adnams Explorer and Flowers IPA) and the generous wine list. The new owners have introduced more than 22 wines sold by the glass, and also expanded the food to include more European flavours. Chef/co-owner Michael Knight and his multinational team have created an eclectic menu that encompasses oysters, classic salads, mussel dishes, steaks and some can-I-have-seconds puddings. A slab of just-crisp bruschetta arrived piled high with flavoursome tomatoes, herbs and onions. Next, salmon in a Jack Daniels sauce with soya and ginger was a wonderful combination. To finish, Belgian chocolate polenta pudding was deliciously moist and light, coated in a thick, chocolate glaze. Service was friendly and eager. The injection of new management and kitchen talent seems to be working very nicely; the Castle buzzes all week long.
