The food at Gilgamesh had always transcended the restaurant’s overblown decor of over-sized Babylonian murals and furniture. Cooking was assured, refined, and unlike its surroundings – a strange, vast space, with tea rooms, DJ station, retractable glass roof and long bar – executed with restraint. Alas, on our recent visit those standards seem to have slipped. The meal started off well with a perfectly deep-fried squid showered with chilli, coriander and shallots. Served with a sour apple dipping sauce, it was clean, crisp and tender. In contrast, a previous favourite, son-in-law eggs with chilli jam, was a touch overcooked and under-seasoned, thus losing the dish’s delicate texture. Banana and prawn rolls suffered from a hard, thick pastry that overwhelmed the undercooked prawns. The worst offender though was beijing steamed dumplings filled with pork; stale, rubbery pastry rendered the morsels inedible. Traditional dim sum dishes such as turnip cake and steamed rice in banana leaf were comparable to those served in Chinatown: satisfying, but not surprising. During a Saturday lunch, the huge restaurant was empty, which may explain why ingredients weren’t at their freshest.

bad bad bad
I couldn't agree more with these comments, this place is so overrated it's unbelievable. Poor service, worse food.
Ok if like me you often ignore reviews which have scored an establishment lowly for poor service dont ignore this one.
I attended Gligamsh last night at 7pm for a friends birthday drinks. Due to a mix up with the name on the guest list my reservation could not be found and i was told by security that i could not come in for a drink at 7pm on a Friday evening because the bar was " full". Despite explaining that i had travelled over 50 miles for the event the bouncers attitude was come back at 10.30 when there is room.
Now eventually my reservation was found and i was allowed to enter an empty bar area which stayed empty all night even at the fabled 10.30.
Gilgamesh set itself up as a bar/lounge/restaurant which is accesible to all but this kind of arrogant attitude is why many people my age avoid the west end. My advice is either book the restaurant and "enjoy" a mediocre meal at inflated prices or if you like me want to enjoy a drink in nice surroundiings with friends then avoid this place like the plague as its ego is as inflated as the prices.
Went for a friend's birthday. Service was average, food was horrible. Generous portions but unpleasant flavour combinations - 'fusion' cuisine at its worst. A 'tofu' dessert was almost inedible. The set menu, even with 50% off september deal, was overpriced.Very dark interior, lacking atmosphere in my opinion. Avoid.
One of the worst meals I've had in a long time. Set menu - generous portions but the food was horrible - actually unpleasant flavours and combinations. Dessert was the worst :'soft tofu' - almost inedible. Terribly overpriced, steer clear of Gilgamesh.
We went to Gilgamesh last night for a dear friend's birthday, and from the very beginning it seemed like the staff did all they could to make us feel uncomfortable.
From the unwelcoming, too-important-for-you attitude of the receptionist/maitre d', to the waiter we had who wouldn't stop looking down his nose at us, sighing when we asked questions and generally acting like he had somewhere much more important to be.
Our food, to be fair, was quite nice for the first two courses of the set menu we'd ordered, but the desert was like something that had been plopped out of a can bought from Tesco.
When the not-too-insignificant bill came, we decided not to pay the listed-as-optional service charge, which the waiter actually interrogated us about ("You're not going to pay the service charge?"), after curtly counting our cash at the table in front of us.
So, Gilgamesh: not-awful food, terrible service, overpriced, and frankly a little too self-important for our liking. Go somewhere else.
The decor is very interseting, the escalator entrance and view of camden lock market unique, however the crowd a little pratentious and the service appaling!!!
I will never return there again!
Small portions taht are not really speacial with very high prices- no value for money. Service was really rude and unattentive! Not recommended!
