Fish Club
When it opened in summer 2004, Fish Club brought the fish and chip shop right up to date by using only top-quality ingredients in contemporary interpretations of classic dishes. High standards have been maintained, even with the pressure of a second branch, opened in autumn 2007 on Clapham High Street. The selection of fish and seafood is still top-notch, with razor clams, smoked sprats, and prawn and chorizo kebab among the more unexpected offerings. A prawn cocktail starter resembled something Heston Blumenthal might recreate on his TV show In Search of Perfection: the lettuce not shredded, but assembled whole like a caesar salad, and super-tasty crevettes gris replacing the more usual, bland prawn varieties. Coley is a firm, meaty fish, perfect as a substitute for cod when fried in a tempura-light batter, as ours was – sublime. Even the greek salad used cucumbers that had been cored to deseed them. Despite the wonderful food and highish prices, Fish Club remains a simple place: you order from the glass display cabinet, then sit at a simple wipe-clean table, or – as a great many do – take your choice away.
